What my dog has taught me:
Live in and for the moment. (Eh, I almost always fail at applying this lesson, because I tend to brood upon the past, and to fret about the future … but my dog has taught me that living in and for the moment is an admirable goal).
Experience the joy of life/la joie de vivre. There is so much sorrow and grief in this world, it can sort of get you down, but there is joy and elation, too. My dog does this joyful sort of leap-run, as he races across the yard in (vain) pursuit of a squirrel; or as he runs the length of the yard in tandem with his two friends (a couple of golden retrievers) next door. The sense of joy is palpable, and infectious.
Let your loved ones know how much you love them. Every time I come home, whether I’ve been away for 5 minutes or for 5 hours, my dog goes crazy with his displays of affection.
If I’m frantically sniffing and barking at a corner of your converted-to-living-space attic bedroom, it’s because a family of squirrels has taken up residence in your attic walls. I am sounding the alarm: why aren’t you listening to me?! (Took me a while to figure this one out, but yeah, there were squirrels in the attic, and it was my dog who first raised the alarm … I then had to hire a company to do a humane squirrel removal, which involved peanut butter and non-lethal traps: fun times!).
