Not sure whether I should put this here or in scrapping pad... I had a question though. How do you guys feel about someone posting their own pages on Pinterest? At another CT forum recently we had been chatting about other mediums for posting because galleries are not nearly as active as they used to be outside of store galleries IMO. How do you guys feel about it when someone posts their own pages to Pinterest kinda like they do on Flickr or some such?

I personally don't like to see total pimping on Pinterest so I have never linked to my own pages before. I like to browse Pinterest oodles and I get frustrated when I feel like someone is using that as a means to promote themselves. It's fun to me to find a page of mine that some random person posted and it seems weird to post a page myself. However....after thinking about it I don't see that posting a scrap page as a scrapper would be the same as pimping really, but more just posting something you did like any other crafty type thing.

Now that I think about it I probably should have put this in scrapping huh?? sorry! That's what I get for being up at 3:30 am and being in a forum hahaha!

i was thinking about this the other day, too - and i think i am against it. i totally understand why someone would do it and i get that it would be great marketing - but i think that if everyone did it, then pinterest would just be a bunch of people advertising themselves and it wouldn't be cool or inspirational anymore. i don't think i'd ever pin any craft that i did myself - i think that people have other means of promoting their own items (galleries, blogs (and then linking to blog link parties, etc), Facebook, etc) ... IDK - i don't go on Facebook nearly as much as i used to b/c it seems like there is so much advertising now (i should probably stop 'liking' pages - haha) and it's not as much fun for me ...

When I first read it I thought you were asking how I feel about people pinning my pages - and I have to say I'm not too happy about that, because I don't even get to know about it. I can at least hope the linking/crediting is done right. If I were starting out now in digi, I guess I'd see the point in watermarking each and every image I upload.

As for pinning your own pages, I don't see the point (well, of course I do, it's advertising!) since Pinterest is supposed to be a visual bookmark site, and you shouldn't need to remind yourself of what you've done.

Well I do pin stuff that I have made...but I don't do it for promotion at all. In fact before that convo on the other board I had never even seen it as promotion...and I kinda felt bad after because I certainly don't want anyone to think that's why I pin my own projects....in fact I think since then I haven't added any of my own pins to my boards.

The reason I pin my own stuff is the same reason that I upload them to facebook....I have friends and family that follow my boards, so to me I see it as just another way of sharing my work with them. I could really care less if someone re-pins something that I have made...but all of our family is thousands of miles away so really unless I post something to FB or Pinterest they don't really see it....and since the majority of my pages are about the kids I like to share them so they get to see them and read the journaling...for me that's how the people that are important to us get to see my kids grow.

I don't pin products that I have designed...and I don't pin CT layouts...just projects and layouts that I have done....and not all my layouts...just ones that I am really proud about...and I don't list credits..I never have...especially on FB...my godmother doesn't digi scrap so she could really care less who designed that flower on my page...all she cares about is seeing the kids lol.

I found out that someone had pinned one of my pages and I was like "Uhh.... thanks?" but it made me feel really odd finding out someone else had put one of my pages out there. After that I started pinning the pages that I added to my blog. At least that way I find out if someone repins it.

I don't pin my own stuff, but if I see it on there then I will repin it. Does that make sense? I'm not the one to put it on, ever, but I'll keep it going if someone else decides it's great.

I wouldn't want to see everyone just pinning their own stuff on there. I think it'd take away some of what makes pinterest so...awesome. It's not a place for self-promotion, in my opinion. Rather, a place to gather and store inspiration.

thanks for the feedback girlies! Brynn, I do not think you should feel bad at all! That makes total sense to me!! I think you can tell when someone is self promoting so you don't need to worry. :)

I guess I never thought about seeing one of my pages on there like that. I always found it flattering because it seems like so many people will see it. The crediting thing never occurred to me! Now that you guys brought it up that definitely makes sense!

I find it odd for someone to be using pinterest as a way to promote themselves.

Brynn I totally understand what you are saying about pinning your own stuff so your family can see it. I would keep doing it if I were you! In fact I've had a friend who just had a baby tell me that she still feels "connected" to me and my family because she can see what I'm pinning on pinterest. I never thought of pinterest as a way to stay in contact until she said that.

I pin inspirational layouts and kits. For me I need things in one place. I used to have a HUGE notebook with detailed notes of where everything was and by who. It was tedious to keep track of it. {Mind you this was for EVERYTHING that inspired me, not just for scrapping!} Along came pinterest and I thought I was heaven. I know a lot of the kits I pin get repinned so I guess I'm unintentionally promoting designers. Same thing goes for other peoples layouts. The drawback to it is that sometimes I want to pin a layout or project and that person hasn't posted it in a gallery but just in a forum. I did that once from here and the person saw the pin and thanked me...but I felt like a jerk because I had no way of crediting them on pinterest. Since then I've stopped doing that and put it in my notebook. Sorry that was kinda rambley, but it all relates right?! LOL!

I think it's cool if someone pins their pages or products (some designers do this) it would be helpful for people who aren't in forums to find products or if someone just wants to browse at digipages

I think I would pin my scrapbook pages, strictly for designer marketing/advertising, designer exposure, etc. CT stuff. But in saying that, I would also be leaving a huge watermark on my pages, cuz well...you just never know. And you'd have to list credits too, etc.

I dunno. It's like a gallery of sorts and it's main purpose (I think) is inspiration. Good question Crystal. I'll wait to see what others say.

I think you can post your layout or projects you are proud of but self promotion is prohibited. Read the Pin etiquette for more information.

I don't think it's right to pin your own layouts on pinterest, Flikr and Facebook sure but not pinterest.

I see some photogs post their photos on Pinterest. Wouldn't this be considered self-promotion? What about digital designers and their products?

Some people even have made things and posted them for sale (with a price and link to their site)??

I don't mind people pinning their pages, but designs is diff... er to me... just seems kinda tacky... but hey to each his own as they say! i do like discovering digi stuff their though. :P

thank goodness for that etiquette, could you imagine what it would be like if designers started posting their stuff, blah!

I guess I should add that I think it's great when our designs and layouts get pinned. I welcome it. I just don't see myself going on there and pinning every product for promotional purposes because I think that's not in the spirit of pinterest. I try to stick to pinning what has inspired me personally rather than marketing. That said, my boards have included TLP stuffs occasionally because I am inspired here. I also don't mind that designers pin their CT layouts...because again, that's more towards inspiration. I guess it's a fine line for most of us as CTMs and/or designers.

Oh, I am seeing loads of this already. It bothers me.

I've seen loads of people pin their own designs, It didn't used to bug me but now that I know the terms I really don't think they should be pinning stuff (I stopped following them once I noticed what they were doing)
