I was a stay at home mom for quite a few years, and while I was never their play date, I was a sort of "camp" supervisor... Summer activities took on a lot of involvement from me as I volunteered to looked after some of their friends who's moms were working moms and needed summer day supervision. My alterior motive - my kids had friends around and I knew what they were up to. Our house became the center of activity for lots of stuff and I always felt I'd rather welcome their friends into my home than have my own children somewhere where I wasn't sure what was going on if parents were absent.
We did lots of bike hikes, walks in the woods to collect stuff, soccer, rollerblading, trips to the science center, etc. and I always had tons of arts and crafts stuff for rainy days. I really loved being involved with my children and their friends. I coached soccer and managed hockey teams. I know this laid the ground work for some of the trust relationship very needed as they grew into their teens and wanted to fly free, experiment, etc.
Being there through thick and thin (and with two rambunctious boys - there were some hairy times...) is a part of my life I cherish greatly. My children are now grown, and not only am I close and great friends with my two wonderful "men". I still have their grown friends visit and call me "mom2".
I would not change a thing. Being their "mom" is the best thing I ever did.
