Kit Folders and Previews?

What exactly is the difference between the .jpg folder and preview in kits, besides one being smaller than the other? Is there any reason to keep one over the other, or just the preview?

I've always deleted the folder, but now I'm wondering.

I have a pc so I like to keep the one named folder.jpg so it shows the kit as the preview of my windows folder. If the one named folder is really small, I’ll delete it and rename the kit preview to folder.jpg. It’s up to your personal preference.

Is this a Windows 10 thing? Or inside of PS it does this?

I have a mac and I do the opposite. I always delete the smaller folder.jpg and keep the kit preview. If there is only a folder.jpg file, I rename it with the kit name. This works better for me because I tag and search previews.

It's a windows in general thing. It doesn't matter what program you use to scrap. I have been doing it ever since I started digi scrappin and downloading/organizing my kits. I don't use the PSE organizer or any other organizing software. I just organize my kits by designer on my hard drive. I like having the folder preview the kit preview so if it's named folder.jpg then windows uses that for the folder preview. It makes it easy for me to see what I have from that designer. The windows search works fine for me and what I use it for.

I know Mac users have more search options and iOS doesn't necessarily use the folder.jpg for the folder preview. I guess that's why designers include both. I usually have an idea of which designer's products I'd like to use, so I just search in their folder for what I'm looking for. It's easier when designers use descriptive names, but it all works out in the end. I'm usually just looking for a specific color, so a quick look at the folder previews, gives me what I want and then I can drill down deeper for specific items. HTH

^^^I used to do something similar except I use a PC. I would keep the folder .jpeg so that it was the image that peeked out of my folder. Then I renamed the Preview image as the kit name and designer initials. But...then my Kits folder got so big that "searching" took 5 or 10 minutes, even if I were to search Tags and nothing else. So now I still have the kit's FOLDER image that I tag, and then I make a copy of that tagged FOLDER jpeg and paste it in my PREVIEWS folder. I rename the file "Kit Name, Designer Initials." That's where I now search since it ONLY has to "look" through those images instead of all. the. contents. of my EHD. It's also great to just scroll through those images to get an idea of what I own and for inspiration.

I've thought about changing my Previews folder so that, instead of just a bunch of images, I have a folder for each kit--and named KIT NAME Designer Initials, and, along with the kit's FOLDER image, it would have a shortcut for the kit's location in my KIT folder. But if I have a shortcut to a kit inside the folder, then does that mean when I search for something in my PREVIEWS folder, my search will take place not just in the PREVIEWS folder but also my KITS folder because it'll follow all those shortcut links? (I hope this all makes sense! I feel like I need screen shots or something lol.)

I keep the bigger one. I use the preview to make an icon. Then I change my Windows folder (the one that looks like a folder and a partial image coming out) to that kit icon... so I scroll when looking for things, I'm looking at kit previews.

I always thought the folder.jpg was a MAC thing!
I keep the larger preview one. I rename it with an _ first so it shows up first in the folder. (Some designers do this, some don't.) I delete the folder one.

My folders (PC) always show as open, and not with something on the outside. Is that what you mean by the folder preview @keepscrappin ?

oops... I hit enter...

Instead of those folders, I make them icons, and change the folder to the kit preview.

If you name it as folder.jpg then it only shows that folder.jpg image when it shows the open folder and not the other images fanned out behind. I'm guessing your template folder has the folder.jpg and the other folders don't have a file named folder.jpg. The folder.jpg allows me to see just the kit preview. If I don't have the folder.jpg then the kit preview may or may not be the top image like in your awolff folder. In my example below. The alpha on the right doesn't have a folder.jpg so it just fans out the images, but the others do have the folder.jpg so I can see easily see the preview.

I don't worry about alpha previews. I just separate them out to their own folder so I can see there is a coordinating alpha. If the alpha has a preview, I change it to folder.jpg but if it doesn't, I don't worry about it.

I also sort out my templates, so I have a folder for just templates. Then I can sort by designer or date modified. I usually have my folders list kits and templates by date modified so my most recent downloads show up first. This is especially helpful because I use the place command to add papers and elements to my layouts. That way my most recent kits show up in the window to choose from when I use file > place in PSE.

Hope that makes sense. I'm being pulled in a couple of directions today. So much to do and so little time... hehe.

Anyone who's a Mac user can use this free app to make their file folder into a 'topped with the preview image' i.e. an icon. I've used it for years. Here's a shot of how my supplies look in this month's TLP folder. Btw, I also put the designer's photo on their main folder. It's like seeing all my friends!

btw the TDD folder from Dawn is one I found on some 2011/12 supplies today!

That is what I made mine look like too, Maureen! :) I have a Supplies folder, and it's all by designer_Kit (or template or whatever it is).

Lol Jenn...great minds and all that. :tree Mine is no anything boring like Supplies heheh...it's Digi Master and I put the date on the name when I make a backup copy to a portable drive. This behemoth is now called Digi Master 111517. 368+GB which I think means that even though it's organized, it's too big.

Ohmyword! I purge! If I had everything from 2010 to now, I would be in trouble! Plus, a computer failure when my Mac died cleared out a bunch for me! Some I re-downloaded here from the pad, but some I lost too! But I found I rarely go back more than a year or two in my supplies. Too many new shiny things! :stash
