A youth being a total prat near one of the school gates this afternoon put Joy's Primary School in Lock Down at the end of the school day. Parents were allowed onto the play ground with the janitor guarding the gate. The youth was covered in clothing including a scarf around his face and shade over his eyes, and a long sword by his side. The police response was very fast. When the school reopened and we walked out there were loads of police cars about and police putting guns back into them. No-one was hurt. A lot of us parents were dealing with shock, and some children were distressed at seeing their parents outside but not being allowed to go out of class to them.
I don't know what kind of prank that kid thought he was pulling, but it's going to cost him.

this happened 2 hours ago, and my adrenaline levels are still high. Why haven't I calmed down yet?

It scares me whenever I hear about these things and I'm not even involved with schools because we homeschool, so I'm not surprised to read you're still upset two hours after the incident. :hug

Angela, I'm so sorry. First of all, I want to say that it makes total sense that you are still feeling shaky. It takes time for the adrenaline to leave your body. And secondly, this affected your kids and others whom you know; that just adds to the stress! As you said, who knows what that kid was thinking?! Whoa. I'm so glad there was a swift police response and everyone is okay

Hugs. I've been through this, sadly, multiple times. We had a bunch of swatting incidents and bomb threats! It was scary, outrageous, and terrible seeing these events unfold on the news, knowing your children are in the school being evacuated, or on lock down in the school is the worst feeling ever. Seeing it on the news was worse too, police roaming the area, with guns, on the roof, etc. Ugh! Just makes my stomach roll.

My kids are very resilient, and seemed to take it in stride, but me... man, I was freaked. And, that feeling of helplessness doesn't leave right away. What was worse that it became repetitive. It happened every two weeks for 6 weeks. The parents were nervous, scared, and keeping kids home. They were all hoaxes. Horrible, and I would never want to repeat those moments!

Oh, my heart reaches out to you. That is just awful. Thankfully no one was hurt. I'm upset just by reading this, I can't even imagine what you are going through.

I'm so sorry this happened, Angela. It's so terribly frightening!! Thank God nobody was hurt and it sounds like it was a little punk who just wanted attention. I HOPE they deal with him harshly.

He is 16 years old. Police have arrested him for possession of an offensive weapon, and he's still in custody. According to the local paper he is not considered to have been a threat to the public. So just an idiot then.

Thank goodness that it wasn't worse! It stays with you... sending more hugs!

Been through it multiple times as well. In this day and age especially it sends the heart into over drive. I am so glad it all ended up OK and hope you can find a way to relax now Angela. I'm sorry you all went through this today. Big hugs!

Sounds like one very confused young man. Consequence for him for sure- and I hope he gets the help needed. So glad it was not a tragedy!
Been in a lock-down as a teacher twice- not fun. So much more serious now than it was back then.
Sure you are calm by now. :heartlub

Big hugs, Angela!! It is so scary. As a teacher, I've been through many bomb threats and lock downs, and it's just scary! Even when nothing comes of it, it's hard to shake that uneasy feeling. I'm so glad no one was injured and hopefully that young man will get some help.

We had a senior at one of our high schools make a "threat" that he was going to do something at his graduation. He was arrested two days before he was set to graduate. Now, he's facing charges. I mean, why? Our school police and local authorities don't take any threats lightly anymore. You will be held accountable. It's just so sad.

That is so scary! I'm not at all surprised that the feelings stayed with you. It's part of that reality of what you see on TV happening so frequently... hitting home and becoming your reality. It's unnerving and hard to shake. I'm so glad that no one was hurt.

Sending BIG HUGS to you! I wish we didn't have to deal with these types of incidents, but it seems to be more and more common nowadays. Glad no one was hurt.

Thank you everyone. It was emotional taking the kids to school today for a lot of us, and some still visibly scared. Senior school staff were on the gates to comfort and reassure, and the police were on high vis presence at both drop off and collection times.
