January 26 - Duotone Technique

Interesting challenge, and technique... Years ago I took a class from Michelle Shreveland in making posters similar to this.. Paid for the class, and as I recall, it was much more complicated... Did end up with some cool posters! This will be fun...

Andy Warhol would be pretty proud of all these layouts!

The right side has the duotone photo.

It seems like each challenge teaches me something I didn't know. So much for thinking I have this Elements program licked! I love this technique and playing with colors!

Great learning for me! I've done this in a different way, but could alter both colours :)
I'm was running into a problem though. I dragged my new photo (with gradient clipped together with it), and it kept making the background of my new page the highlight colour, and refusing to let me add any papers etc to cover it.
I stopped having this issue when I went back to my original, and flattened my picture. I could then move it to my final page. Only prob with this is I can't fine tune it there. I have to go back to my original to change anything colourwise and then reflatten and redrag it back to my final page.
Maybe that helps someone else? :)
(I should add that I'm working with a REALLY old version (2.0 I think) of photoshop, haha)

If you have such an old version ... does this have the ability to clip a layer to the underlying layer?
When you add a gradient layer to your photo it only colours your photo because there is no other layer, but if you then take your photo and your gradient layer together into your LO everything under your photo changes as well. You need to clip your gradient layer to your photo, and if you can not do that, then yes, you have to flatten your photo together with the gradient layer... I don't think you can do it any other way.

OK... I guess I need help... It is not working for me, like I know it should... I get to create gradient map and it turns my photo to a negative... if I click the same icon again , it then returns it to a high contrast B & W...what it should be... I click OK... But I do not get the pop up window with the gradient map sliders, and choices.. If I just go to gradient, it is a whole differ thing... has to be in the Map to work ... Have looked at your screen shot and I can see , when you change the color you can see it ... but I can't see how to get that drop down gradient map thing... thus cannot change the color... in my layers palette I have a small icon of a gradient map with sliders, but it does nothing, it is linked to a white mask... Working in PSC5 ... going to read through this thread and see if anyone else had this problem....

This was a fun challenge!
I can't express enough how much I love being in the forest! I live a few minutes walk from Kalmia Gardens preserve.

This challenge made me go ack!!! But I learned something new and I do like my layout. And so fascinated by all the layouts in this thread and how fast they got done! Way to go everyone!!
