Hi ladies. I'm hoping someone can help me. I sized my pictures in photoshop elements to be exactly 4x6 I put borders on some photos and they got cut off. The guy at the photo shop said they are true 4x6 with just about 3mm cut off the edges. That wasn't the case with my photos. More was missing on the sides than the top and bottom. Should I assume a 4x6 in Elements isn't 4x6 or is it the printing that is way off from 4x6? Any ideas how to correct this for the future? I'm at a loss. Thanks so much!

When you get your photos printed at a photo development place, they blow the photo up bigger and then print it to allow for bleed. Every place that develops photos do this, because it's what their machines do. This is okay as long as you don't have photos with borders on them. If you do, it looks weird when parts get cut off.

This is part of the reason I print my photos at home, so that I have more control over it. When I print at home I set up the print option so that there's minimum "expansion", which means it does print out at almost exactly the size I want it to be, with a border. Some examples:

One thing you may want to check into is some photo places will just have an option to print with a white border. You just upload your photos just as they are and they will be printed out with a white border. Then it saves you a lot of headache and time!

that's what was happening to me as well except my journaling was getting cut off. So frustrating. I too had to print with a white border. I am printing mine at home.

Not to sound dumb but I don't understand the whole bleed thing. They know the exact size of the photo paper and where the image ends. Why is it so far off?

I found it also depends on the place you go and the person doing the printing at the time. Which is really frustrating.

On the occasions that I wanted it to be exact because i had text on the edge or something, I would place my photo in a larger document. Ie I would centre my 4x6 photo on a 5x7 doc. Print it at 5x7 (and tell them not to adjust it) and then you can cut it out exact.
