Is there such a thing as a good "starter" scary movie for the middle school set?

My daughter (who just turned 13 yesterday) has become slightly obsessed with the idea of watching a scary movie this Halloween. Scary movies are not my thing, so I have no clue if there are any out there that might be appropriate for this age group. I also don't think she's as ready for one as she thinks she is, so there's that issue too.

Thanks!

I watched poltergeist when I was 12 and did fine. I'm not a scary movie person either.

Ohhh... that's a good suggestion! I remember watching it around the same age... a little older. Just checked it out on common sense media and they even said OK for 12. Thanks Sarah!

No no, not Poltergeist, I still can not look at it!!!! And have been scared of elevators and tv's for a while because of it....

But... I am a scary person, so...

Also, has she seen Gremlins? I know there is some language, but honestly I think you're going to find that with a lot of movies in that genre.

my kids LOVE the Gremlins!! That's a great movie for that age group - funny, scary, a bit cheesy, so it's easier to get through than a super scary movie.

I loved Children Under the Stairs around that age. It was suspenseful-scary. And I felt pretty good that I was able to make it through it.

Thanks for the additional suggestions! I had forgotten all about Gremlins as well. Somehow I've never seen that one. I'm not entirely sure that she's going to go through with watching anything scary... but I'm happy to be armed with options!
