So, with instagram, when you take a picture on your phone, do you have an option whether you want to post it to instagram or not, or does it automatically post??

If you are taking it in the app it will post when you hit share unless you are out of service or in airplane mode. Then your upload will fail but the edited photo will save to your camera roll.

So, if I take it outside of the app, do I have the option of posting that later?

Oh yea :) I take probably 99% of my IG photos outside the app. I personally prefer the native camera mode on my iPhone to the one in IG.

When you open the camera in IG, there should be a round blue button in the middle towards the bottom. To the left of that is a little square. Tap that and your camera roll will open, then you can select any photo on your phone.

yes julie. it will show in your feed with FAILED next to the thumbnail. there is a reload (to share again) option or and X to delete the photo. so later, when you turn airplane mode off (or are connected to wifi) you can post it.

If you take it outside the app, it won't show in the app at all until you load it. It says "FAILED" when you took it in the app (or loaded it from your camera roll) when you weren't connected to the internet.

I always take mine outside of the app. It may have changed, but when it first came out, the Instagram app didn't take full resolution photos, so I never got into a habit of taking them in Instagram.

I also like to take it outside IG then bring it in and sometimes edit it in there. :)
