next week we will be going to visit my dad and step-mom. the last time my kids saw them was five years ago - meagan was aboug 5 months old. needless to say my kids don't know them very well, so there's not the familiarity of grandma & grandpa to fall back on for visiting.
the other thing is, they own a campground, and will be basically working the campground from morning until night, so we can't really GO anywhere for our entertainment... although the kids and i are certainly able to hop in the van and go venturing out if we should choose... i just want to keep this to a minimum so as not to be rude.
so i need to think of things i can do for 2 boys (0 and 8) and a girl (6) to keep them entertained for hours upon hours at a campground. here's what i've thought of so far...
* fishing
* a photo scavanger hunt, where we take our hunting list & go find and photograph the things on it
* movies on the laptop
yup, i've exhausted my creativity here. any help would be MUCH appreciated. any links to ideas on blogs you've seen or ANYTHING really!!
Madlibs?
Nature walks? you could brings some crayons and paper and do the fun rubbings of various nature-y things?
Collect some rocks to bring home and paint all cute like?
Reading a book together?
Card games?
what about croquet? or some of those fun cheesey games you find in the toy section of target.. Like a wiffle ball or tennis with a birdie. nature hunt, making sand are pictures. or one thing i marked on my pinterest boards is painting rocks. should be lots of rocks at a camp ground. will you have electricity? my kids love perler beads. all you need is a flat area and an iron. my kids also love to make sun catchers ( i buy kits at hobby lobby of those) i also buy lots of unpainted wood and cermamic pieces, take some bottles of acrylic paint and my kids are busy and happy for hours on end. you can also use that same paint to paint the rocks. you can buy a bunch of felt and make finger puppets or bean bag pets. i hope you guys have a good time and create some fun memories! kids love having a job to do. maybe you could even put them to work around the camp ground. checking trash cans and stocking bathrooms and stuff. LOL
jacque! you are a wealth of crafty knowledge! great ideas!
kelly, i'll have to check out the link in a bit.
karen, no ipad here.
sara i love the book reading idea. and we just got a few card games at the store today.
we are also going to do vacation journals. i bought a bunch of supplies - stickers, markers, crayons, glue sticks, paint, etc that they can use to do an art journal of their trip.
also love the rock painting and the finger puppets. great ideas!!
Go to the library and check out the book Leaf Man. We did leaf men projects after reading this by going on a walk to collect all kinds of leaves, grasses, sticks and stones etc and then glued them to a big piece of construction paper.
BUT, my experience with kids and camping is that they find things to do all on their own. Takes their bikes and let them explore. They will probably makes friends with the other kids camping there and you probably won't need to do much more than feed them.
well karen, we're not actually camping. i wish we were. we're staying in a hotel about 30 minutes from my parents. they own the campground where we'll be visiting, but we won't have a site. and i really thought about taking bikes, but that is another thing that just won't work, much to my disappointment. we are going to another set of family first for a big bday party for sebastian. between suitcases for 10 days, bday gifts, 3 kids and myself, the bikes just can't make it... we don't have a bike rack for the van.
