How to get teens out of bed for school?

That's a tough one, just because 4:45 is so early!! But I do echo others with some sort of consequence, whether it's missing something or having to pay your or someone for a ride.

She was really good about getting up when she was in 8th & 9th grades. She'd get up on her own to be ready for 5:00 am practices. But it's been getting progressively worse.

I'll definitely use some of these strategies. Thanks so much! :heartlub:hehe

Throw cold water on her?

I seriously did this to my oldest, more than once. Well, I didn't really "throw" it...I more like trickled it...but it was enough to get him up. He was the WORST!! And I did leave him a time or two. I told him that I would not be late to work because he couldn't get up. We had some super stressful mornings. He had an alarm, but would sleep right through it no matter how loud. I did the pots and pans thing as well. I know I'm not helpful, but I do feel your pain.

Hmmmm - teens really need at least 8 hours of sleep and really 9 is better (just ask her doctor). So every morning she can't get up on time, she has to go to bed a half hour (or hour) earlier. I mean, obviously she is not getting up because her body needs more sleep. And the phone has to stay in the kitchen so she can go to sleep sooner....

Sort of tongue in cheek, but really teens do need more sleep than younger kids. Our doctor really does ask this question at the annual exam along with what do they eat for breakfast.

My mom was at work by 5 am in the mornings, so my dad would come in from work to take us to school around 7. We had to get up on our own and she'd call to make sure we were up. Usually if we weren't up, it was like Bev mentioned, because we didn't get enough sleep. My daughter is only 8 and hates getting up in the mornings, but she's always worse when she hasn't had enough sleep.

My husband has 5 brothers. They used to keep their house pretty cold at night, so their mom would snatch everyone's quilts off the beds to get them up if they weren't up the first time she came through. He said he remembers many mornings that cold air would hit him and he got up so quick..lol!

Better plan for the water route in case you go that one:

Marbles. In the freezer.

You dump them under the sheets and no matter which way they try to roll and move, the gravity made sure the marbles stay right next to their skin.

I had to get clever, my teenager just said "thanks for the free shower." and went back to sleep, no matter the temperature. ^.^

I'm lucky though, my kids get up on their own now out of habit. I have a temper that would scare the Devil himself. (Raised in Texas for 20 years, that'll do it to you... )

Either way, good luck!!! I hope you find a stress free way for the both of you!

@QuiltyMom @Karen Thanks girls! I needed a solution that wouldn't have a potential to grow mould (I'm super worried about that kinda thing) and was re-usable, you scoop up the marbles and throw them back in the ziplock and into the freezer! Voila! Ready for the next time! (I only had to use mine about a month and then bam, suddenly I had no problems getting people out of bed!)

This, I love.

@Serena bwwaaahhh! This is brilliant!

I raised 6 children and they are all different. Some are early risers and we had 2 that were pains in the :assslap

I've done the ice water on one of mine........... he got up super fast! He is now almost 30 a State Trooper and he sets 3 alarms... LOL yes 3 He tells me each one is louder and further away so the last one forces him to get out of bed to shut it off. I do agree with the alarm, they do need to know how to set and get up before they leave the home. The only one left at home is my youngest and he is a senior in high school drives himself. But I have gotten a call from his first hour teacher for being late. Once they have..... ? .... late slips the teacher is required to called home. If they get another late notice I believe they get a detention. He has never gotten a detention but I've let him know that would be his fault if he did.

I would recommend you set a actual alarm, not her cell phone as we all know they sleep with them and then they get turned off while they are still half asleep, one that makes her get out of bed to turn it off. See if that helps.

My preteen is having this issue, once she is up and out the bathroom she is good but it's getting her out of bed. Mind you she doesn't have this problem during the weekend!

LOL Dalis ... that is my son to a tee. He gets up so early on the weekends - it isn't even funny. Amazing what they can accomplish when the day is "theirs" and not tethered to school!

So far I haven't had to deal with this. My oldest (9th grade) sets her alarm and gets up to start her school work before everyone else (she comes by it honestly thought - she's just like me!). We do homeschool, but I do have an 8am bkfst wake up. I only have one kid who I always have to wake up. I usually let him sleep until 8:30 or so...he's deaf and has no idea what is going on in our household. LOL! I think that could be nice sometimes! He definitely needs a LOT more sleep than the rest of us. I have a feeling he'll be a toughy when he's a teenager.
