Hi Ladies.
I'm trying to change my avatar but when I resize my photo to 100x100 it is miserably pixelated. What to I do to make my photo into an avatar that looks half way decent? I made the one I currently had following directions from the tlp b-day party. It was a tiny photo that I used. The one I want to use now is big. There has to be a better way to do this. Thanks so much!

Hmmmm....I think I just sharpened mine for web and then reduced the size. It's not super sharp but not bad either.

Mine is so pixely you can see each square of color clearly. It looks like some weird artsy thing. Not what i was going for. I opened the photo then tried to resize it after cropping it. I also tried dragging the corner to make it fit on a 100x100 pixel canvas. I must be doing something wrong.

hmmm that sounds like it has been enlarged rather than shrunk, if you can see large colour pixels.

is it 100 pixels x 100 pixels and 72dpi?

Nope. I resized to to 100 pixels in the bigger dimension and it is 72dpi. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. My original image is 36 inches x 54 inches. Is the picture too big to resize without it looking bad? Do I need to take a photo with my iphone rather than my dSLR? I just wanted to use a particular photo I have already. I'm stumped. I've only made one other avatar and I had no problem. Thanks for your help!

Are you using Photoshop? Try resizing to 100px @72 dpi, run a sharpen (Unsharp Mask), and then save-for-web (which does result in a much nicer image I think).

Sorry I'm not much more use than that - I've been using the same resize-for-web action for the last 5 years and sadly it isn't available for purchase anymore. :(

hmmm not sure what is happening then. Here's how I do an avatar from a photo . . .

Select the cropping tool in the tools menu and you should see in the top menu boxes where you can put width, height and resolution.
In width put 100px, in height put 100px, in resolution put 72 and make sure pixels/inch is selected in the drop down menu.
Then open the photo you want to use and crop it to how you would like it to look on your avatar. You will notice the crop tool stays as a square due to the measurements you put in, but you can still make it crop a larger or smaller area. With those measurements in the crop tool menu the crop tool will automatically resize the area you crop for you to 100x100

Make sure you delete those measurements from the crop tool menu when you are finished otherwise you will be cropping everything to this size :)
