I have been doing family history and would love some help pronouncing family names from the Netherlands.

Have you used any websites or apps that help with pronunciation, particularly of names? I tried searching the internet but didn’t find exactly what I was looking for. I would also love it if you want to include how your own name is pronounced. I am sure I have been pronouncing some member and designer names wrong in my head!

Here are a couple family names for today:
Stijntje
Leentje
Oosterdijk

Thanks in advance for your help! I look forward to learning from you!

Well in Afrikaans they would sound a little like this...
steun-kie
lean-kie
oos-ter-dyke

I know that Afrikaans comes from Dutch - so hopefully that is a little closer. I am sure that some Netherlands folk can chime in.

My name is Stef-a-nie, with three syllables. As opposed to the more normal Steph-ny sound of Stephanie.

Thanks Stefanie! My name is three syllables as well, which made it hard for me to say as a child. ;)

Have you tried using google? I’ve used it for this purpose before. I’ll have to double check when I’m on my computer, but I believe it’s in google translate where you add the word and you can choose to hear how it sounds.

I also just found this site: Word Hippo. I haven’t used it but it gives you the ability to hear pronunciations of words in multiple languages. Could be worth a try!

Thanks Jan! I don’t know why I didn’t try Google Translate because that’s what I usually use for translation. I guess I didn’t realize it sounds stuff out because I’m usually just looking for a word. I’ll check it out today. Word Hippo sounds good too. Thanks again!
