Any Texans here? My husband got a job offer at Hewlett Packard in Houston. We think its near the northwest suburbs. He isn't sure he'll take it yet, we are just gathering info. He has had several recruiters call him so it's possible we could end up there if he doesn't accept this current offer. We are currently in Northwest Arkansas, about 9 and a half hours from Houston.

i grew up in houston until 10th grade, and then moved back there for a year after college. i haven't lived in TX since that year, but i'd be happy to go back if i ever had the chance. i really like houston a lot! (especially the food - i really miss houston restaurants!) do you have any specific questions? many of my good friends are still there - and one of my college roommates who is from the northeast moved there a few years ago for a job and is enjoying it too ...

however, i will say that i've lived in a lot of places (houston, dallas, richmond, long beach (CA), paris, NYC, chicago and now boston) - and i really like them ALL - hahaha ... i think i'm pretty laid back about where i live :)

everyone in Houston works for HP! hahahha or oil and gas.... a running joke in these parts. :P We moved to Houston for the exact same reason... DH works for HP.

the people are wonderful, our neighborhood is AMAZING, the schools are stellar, but i could do without the Houston part! :P But i'm also wicked homesick, so you might be asking the wrong person! :P

I grew up 3 hours from Houston. We used to go for shopping every year for Christmas and back to school and we'd go see off-broadway shows and plays, and I loved the museums as a kid! I also dated a guy in college who lived there. I've spent A LOT of time there! I had always wanted to live there and planned to move after college. I had a job offer with Johnson & Johnson. But, I met Husband 3 weeks before I was offered the job (that I worked my butt off for), but turned it down 'cause I knew he was the one! :) I don't regret it, but I do wish I could have lived there. TX schools ARE stellar and there are so many fun things to do there. And I agree with Dana...great restaurants! Good luck!

I am in San Antonio that is about 4 hrs away, but lived in Houston and surrounding areas for 10 years. I love Texas...Traffic was worse there then here, but not as bad as Dallas. More and more people seem to keep moving to Texas so it all seems to be growing and getting more crowded.

I am so glad to see some great responses here. We are having a hugely hard time deciding.

Lauren, what office is your hubbs in? Scott would be in the old Compaq headquarters on Cutten Road. It's near the Tomball area. We were looking at houses in the Woodlands. Seems to be the best area, but I've been given a few different ideas.

Our issue is that Scott will likely need to rent a nice, small apartment for about 6 months. He'd take our oldest cocker, Wil, so we need something pet friendly. Hopefully we could buy after that if we are going to stay. I am not finding a lot of good rental property. I guess outside college towns is harder. We make it even more complicated by needed a fenced in yard and a very open minded pet friendly landlord (4 dogs, 5 cats). They take a risk with us but we have lots of references that our pets are clean and well cared for. No chewing the doors or peeing on the carpet kind of things going on.

I am worried about the heat, I think it's bad here. I'd rather move north.

Lauren, where are you from originally? Is your family far? Homesick is a big concern of mine too.

Dana, I don't know what specific questions I have... we are mostly worried about being able to afford housing in a nice area, me getting a job, and the cost of living. Scott's offer is for 56,000 (I know that is personal info, but frankly, I don't see any reason to *not tell ya'll)... it's 10,000 more than our combined income now. We barely get by. I'd keep my job here for about 6 months but I don't contribute a huge amount to our income... I am the lowest level admin assistant at the U of A). I think we keep coming back to... can we survive and do "well" on that?

Another big question we have is if Scott can get a better offer, he has a ton of experience and now two college degrees with specific programming experience that is hard to come by. We keep thinking we should hold out for something better but what if it never comes??

Kim, it would be pretty darn cool to live closer to you and some of my other scrap friends. People IRL think I am a nut and do not understand the scrap world I love so much. Be nice to have IRL friends who "get it" and have them close enough to meet up every now and again.
