Now that we are officially getting in to the holiday season, it's time for holiday treats!! My teen has been requesting Puppy Chow aka Muddy Buddies for weeks!

I've been putting it off, and I'm not sure why...it's really easy to make. I'm also not sure why I only seem to make it during the holidays. I have made it for gifts in mason jars for coworkers and family a few times in the past because the recipe makes such a big batch.

Is there a treat that you especially like making during the holidays?

I always loved making Rice Krispie Treats both the marshmallow ones and the ones made with chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and peanut butter. Not in my future this year but watch out Christmas 2021!!!!

My mom is a master Christmas cookie baker and bakes dozens and dozens of cookies in December. Some are for the family, and some are ones she gives away to friends, neighbors, etc. We do spend one afternoon making them with her. The season culminates in a cookie buffet Christmas Eve & Day that we nosh on between opening gifts & Christmas dinner.

The regular rotation includes mint chunk, oatmeal raisin chocolate chip, chocolate crinkles, snickerdoodles with white chocolate chips (I think?), and something else that is not chocolate-y that I can't remember off the top of my head. She also makes a mint chocolate cheesecake with Oreo crust that's only made Christmas Day and for my birthday (which is 31 days later).

I could make the cookies, of course, but they just don't taste/feel the same, KWIM? I definitely would struggle with the cheesecake! :giggle

What a great tradition!! My mom never really did cookies, fudge is her thing, and the reason that I have never really attempted it. I know it wouldn't be the same. And oh my goodness, I think I need the mint chocolate cheesecake in my life!

Homemade Chex Mix (called Bits & Bites/Méli-Mélo in Canada...). I make a large (double or triple) batch every year, and it's never enough.

Also: gingerbread cookies with royal icing. And those cute little peanut butter cookies with Hershey's kisses in the middle (I guess they're called "blossoms"? but I just call them "those cute little peanut butter cookies with Hershey's kisses in the middle"!)

@IntenseMagic, those Muddy Buddies look awesome!

Jan, those look SO good!! They probably wouldn't upset my stomach either. YUMMMMM

PS - I just looked at the recipe - I can't eat peanut butter at all and very little chocolate. I know I've had that without those ingredients - just the cereal and powdered sugar. Have you ever made them plain like that?

I make a huge batch of Party Snacks (Chex mix on steroids). The recipe has 1 cup of bacon fat and 1 cup of butter. It is evil but really delicious. I used to make lots of cookies, but over the years, I noticed the family gravitated to the salty snacks much more as we played cards and games.
I love puppy chow, I should look for a non nut version for the grand kids.

At our house we always have a cheese ball (the recipe has been in our family for about 40 years) and we all love it! Sometimes we make tortilla rolls with jalapeños, sometimes we do bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers. And of course we love Texas Caviar (A chip dip made with Black-Eyed Peas and Cilantro). We like our spicy, salty foods!

I've never made that muddy buddies, but I think I should give it a try. My boys would love it!

One of the things my MIL always makes for the holidays is her fudge with lots of walnuts in it and she always makes extra to leave at our house. YUMMY! I don't have any go to treats... I just try new stuff and mix it up. Anything sweet disappears really quickly around here though! :giggle

If I ever made those muddy buddies I'd be rolling around the house. I'd never stop eating them!

When I was growing up we baked from December 1 all the way to Christmas Eve. Our freezer was stuffed with cookies and breads. Everything was made in small enough amounts that our tiny freezer wouldn't be overloaded. Some of the things we made were:
  • butter richies (sugar cookie with browned butter frosting, topped with an almond slice)
  • fudge
  • snowballs (Russian Tea Cakes)
  • pepparkakor (Swedish ginger snaps)
  • potato chip cookies
  • molasses crinkles
  • peanut butter blossoms
  • spritz
  • frosted butter cookies (we would spend HOURS as kids decorating them!)
  • rosettes
  • chocolate bark
  • limpa (Swedish rye bread)
  • Julkage (cardamon fruit bread)
  • lemon bars
  • snickerdoodles
  • chocolate crinkles
  • chocolate chip cookies
  • And Mom would make her Parker House rolls
We'd eat our big Christmas meal starting at 4:00 pm on Christmas Eve, go to church service, come home and open gifts, then we'd eat our second meal of DESSERTS! It was absolutely the best!

I love my BFF's pumpkin bread and homemade caramels. She's been ill this year and she's so sad she doesn't feel like baking. Hopefully she'll get better soon and can get back to doing the things she enjoys.

You can always substitute sunbutter for the peanut butter. It's what I do. It's not quite the same taste, but the consistency is a perfect match.

I haven't done them like that, but I did see a recipe the other day to make a lemon version of them.
