My hair is scaring me. It is soooo different from the way it used to be, maybe a year+ ago. I need to know if this is normal and if or what I can do about it.
I used to LOVE my hair and now I just hate it.

I've got super, super {super} thick hair, some parts are course, but others seem kind of fine. I've never had nice curls, my hair has always had to be straightened unless it's cut short {and the right way} and then if I add enough stuff it'll curl along the sides. I've always had my hair colored and highlighted as well.

Over the past year, the color has gone completely dull, lackluster and the ends seem fried despite the fact that I get my hair cut every 3 weeks (that's how fast it grows).

I'm so sad. No matter what I do with it, it just doesn't seem right.

The only thing that's really different is that I switched stylists (my friend now cuts my hair) and she uses Lanza products. Could this be the problem?

What else can I do to fix it? If I don't keep up with the color, I'll be gray and that just isn't going to happen.

Leah, I don't have an answer for you but to say that somedays I love my hair and some days I hate it. I am not sure if it has more to do with my actual hair or the way I am feeling that day. But I also have really thick hair that is kind of curly. Some days I go curly and some days I go straight. I do know that if I straighten it too often it goes oily near the roots and dry on the ends, and my hair is short. Apparently when you straighten a lot the oil glands in your scalp produce more oil. Maybe you could try a good treatment.

I use this really amazing product, starts with an M-oil (not Moroccan) and it works well. But even the styling products that I've used for years all of a sudden just aren't doing it for me anymore. At first, I blamed it on the product. Then I blamed my CHI and went out and bought a new one. Now I'm wondering if it's the product line that my stylist uses?

Or...could it be just that my hair is changing, maybe due to hormones or something? It's not like I'm pregnant and I'm too young for menopause (I hope). My hair isn't falling out, which honestly might help a little if it did.

I think sometimes hair does just change over time. However, I think it *might* be worthwhile to get your thyroid checked. My mom, who always had coarse/somewhat curly hair lost the curl and saw her hair change in texture over about a year. She thought it was her products too and, in fact, had almost decided to switch salons thinking that something was wrong with what they were using. Her hair never fell out - just changed. When she finally got her thyroid checked and medicated, her hair started returning to normal. Her story is so much like what you described that I thought it was worth a mention. Hope that helps!

My hair TOTALLY changed while I was pregnant with my daughter (she was #4). And it's stayed that way. I'm a frizz ball now and have weird curly spots that I never had before. So yeah, I totally think hormonal stuff can change your hair! My change has been permanent, unfortunately. LOL Have you tried using some different products to see if it helps? What about the brand of color being used? That can make a difference too, especially if you used to use one brand at that other stylist and the new stylist uses something different....

It totally helps Laura! I actually just, like at the beginning of July, had all my routine bloodwork done. But in addition to that, I also asked specifically to have my hormone levels checked, thyroid and Lupus indicators (my Mom has Lupus) and as far as I know, they all came back normal.

I didn't have them checked solely because of my hair, I've got some other weird female things going on...I'm always too hot, comes in flashes, excessive (and unnecessary sweating), exhaustion, slow metabolism and the whole list goes on. Seriously, I feel geriatric.

Karah, as far as the different brand of color, this is something that I am considering too. I'm not sure what my old stylist used, but I know that my girlfriend uses L'anza coloring products. I've got a call in to my old stylist to see what used to use.

I've decided, for now, I better just grow my hair back out and then I can at least tie it in a pony. lol
