HEIC photo format

I finally upgraded my iPhone 6 to an iPhone 12 Mini! :yahoo

I've just realized that the photos from my new phone have a different file format than JPG. It's HEIC. I was going to share one here in a post but the forum doesn't accept it. I tried putting it on a Photoshop document and it worked just like a JPG, so it won't affect my scrapping, and I've already posted one on Instagram, but not being able to share onto webpages like this is annoying. I found I can change settings to make them JPG instead, but supposedly HEIC takes up less space. Is it better quality? I am looking for more information to read on this topic.

Also, when I imported them into Lightroom like I've always done, separate XMP files were created for each photo, like when I shoot RAW with my DSLR. If I want to avoid that (don't I? for storage reasons?) I guess I need to change to DNG on import?

I set my iPhone to jpg saving mode. It became a hassle when I wanted to share photos with non-apple folk. The HEIC format doesn’t play nicely with PSCS6. Until the rest of the tech world and Microsoft switch, I’m keeping the jpg mode. There are fast converters out there, but I just don’t need another step in the process. Good luck.

That's what I thought of, but then I wondered if I want the qualities of the HEIC.

One of my classmates always attaches heic photos to her work. It's so annoying to have to go and convert it over in order to see it.
I hate that Apple decided to make a format that no one else uses. Ugh.
Anyway, I don't know anything about heic except that.

So, my real question: Are you loving having a new phone?

Yes! My old phone was getting so sluggish. It was especially bad with my journaling app, Day One, which I use every day, so that's a big deal. It would crash at least 3 times before staying open every time I tried to use it. And other apps ran slowly too. Good thing I'm patient.

But I said that when I get a job I'm getting a new phone! It's funny that all 3 phones I've ever gotten, I've gotten them all in Novembers (2013, 2015, 2020).

The camera is pretty awesome too. I love its low light capability and increased range, so it shows more detail in the highlights and shadows. I'm unsure how much I like the more vibrant color though, and sometimes it seems too warm; but maybe it's just that I'm used to the duller, darker iPhone 6 photos.

I use a paid camera app that saves my photos as jpeg. I don't take many photos with my phone and I don't need the extra hassle with file formats. I always get the largest phone storage available, so that space isn't an issue. (The Apple people are always shocked at how much of my storage I'm actually using when I upgrade -- it's always over half -- and I just tell them I take a lot of photos. LOL Which is true, because all my DSLR photos automatically transfer to my iPad and their thumbnails get added to my phone.)

I got curious about this and did a little googling and found this article. It seems like the HEIC format has some great benefits. I found this especially interesting: "HEIC format can hold multiple images in one file, such as live photos, animations sequence, and burst-photo shots." That would have been so nice for the dozens of HDR pics I took of DD in cap & gown this summer, all of which imported as multiple nearly-identical photos per image.

Unfortunately, as a Windows user, it doesn't look like I have a way to try to check it out. Even though I have High Efficiency selected as my format option, everything is still showing up as JPG. When I connect the phone to my computer it just shows them as JPG, and even when I emailed myself a photo as an attachment, it still came through as JPG. I'm confused as to why the attachment was JPG (even when I looked at the email on my phone), but I guess at least I don't have to worry about converting anything. :think

I use HEIC. I haven't had any issues with my non apple friends and my photos. Mostly I send them via text.

My phone photos are automatically uploaded to my Smugmug, and from what I can tell, they are then made into JPG's. If I share a whole nights worth of photos with my friends, I send that link.

I like the HEIC format, as I can play with the photo, and choose the best "slice" of the photo for the final picture. Plus, it's a little like Harry Potter and make the images little movies.

Another benefit that I have liked is when I make little videos for a friends birthday, it includes the photos and some are like little videos within the video.
