So, today I went to a Ham Radio class. And I'll be back next Saturday. It was interesting for sure! Why did I take it? Because it was free and why not?

Anyone out there a Ham Radio operator?

I’m not an operator but I think your class sounds very interesting. Yay for free!

I always think it's great to learn new things! That's cool that you were able to take the class for free. :) I used to love playing with the CB radio my dad had and on road trips it was fun to talk to the people in the other vehicle in our caravan. LOL

Oh the good old days of CB radio! I had one in my car in the 70's and had an antenna that was inside the car along the windshield instead of outside. As I was getting on the highway to head back to Toledo after a weekend at home with my parents I heard a couple of truckers talking about the "beaver" entering the highway from the exit ramp. I just sat back and laughed because it was me... I was the only vehicle getting on the highway and a couple semi's passed me as I was accelerating.

My chemistry teacher in high school loved using the "10-4" expression during class on October 4th. Cracked me up that morning... I had him first class of the day and what a way to start my birthday. Yep, my birthday is 10-4.

A couple college friends and I went to FL for spring break one year and drove. We had a CB and had a good time talking with the truckers during our trip. Kept us from getting bored. Much different time back then.

@HavaDrPepper Yep! We listened and had a CB radio on long road trips as a kid. I learned the difference between CB and Ham though. You have to be licensed to have a Ham Radio, but not for a CB. Part of it is the distance you can talk and such. Ham even has a set up through the internet to talk to people far away which I think is intriguing.

@Scrapping with Liz That's neat! I don't know anyone into Ham radio, well except the class teacher! I took the class on a whim because why not?

I knew ham radio had a longer distance and had to be licensed. There were stories of operators helping other people get help from hundreds of miles away when I was a kid. Both communities were loaded with very special people, always willing to help others.

I have never been but my BIL was. In the wilds of Minnesota Lake Country - back in the day - it was the only communication they had available. Cell service still is sketchy there. His handle was Steamboat Willie.
