Gulp!!! I think I want to Art Journal with PAINT!!

I wonder how long it took her to learn how to AJ like this!!!

Her pages are so filled with emotion that I'm literally crying watching her journal unfold!
Remember, she did it one. page. at. a. time. Try imitating a few people's styles and yours will surface. I played a bit with France Papillion to learn a new style.
YOU'VE GOT THIS!!!

It's been pretty much all day, and this is what I have in my cart so far:

Hubby thinks I should start with gouache instead of watercolors or acrylic. He's a graduate of Art Center College of Design, so he's pretty versed in art stuff. I know NOTHING. LOL

The "Home" spread in Laly Mille's journal, with the red birdhouse - thats what she made for the Wanderlust course (Everything Art series). The birdhouse came from a home decor catalog...it goes to show that one does not necessarily have to have loads of skill with hand-drawn items. Just clip some ephemera, add to your journal, then doodle on top.

I think what's been holding me back is that I can't even draw a stick figure - how am I going to paint??

I can't draw to save my life either, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE to play in a real journal with paint and layering goodies. I've done both hybrid stuff, where I print some goodies from my stash here and then paint and glue and smush stuff on top. And I've also done with some digital goodies. Check out some of Donna Downey's Inspiration Wednesday videos on YouTube. (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJO3umxnPYRw-C5UllKwZycy-AcjsCIeV) They are great fun and she does a lot of finding random stuff you already own and making art with it. A little gesso, a little acrylic paint and some stuff you probably already have (think recycling bin and junk drawer) and boom, you're doing it! Here are a couple of mine with some hybrid elements mixed in with paints and texture stuff

I'll check out her YouTube! Thank you for sharing your pages too. I am looking forward to getting started. Although, a little hiccup...Melissa has Covid and you know what that means...the whole family is gonna get it. sigh. We already had it in January.

Yes. I have high quality for watercolor work. But for AJ, the supplies are tough on brushes, so that's why I just replace a pack similar to yours every couple months.
Glue Sticks
Blick Glue Stick 1.3 oz

Might be. I don't use Gouche, so can't say! :D But watercolor pencils - yes! They won't let you do washes, but they are good for control. Just begin... :banana:agree

Hubby has an entire set of Prismacolor pencils, so he wants me to try those out first before buying more. I told him that watercolor pencils are different, so he wants to see them. We are going to go down to Blick Art Supplies and see the stuff in person.

My pile is beginning

Value Village or similar type of store is good for old used books, you might find brushes, sponges, etc for adding texture, Michael's coupons for paint, glue, sprays, etc.

Have fun. I gave it up years ago but used to create mixed media cards. I found lots of used templates online that were fun to play with. Alcohol inks are fun too, not sure what price range they are now but years ago they weren't too expensive.

Oh yeah, I need to get some old books and I also want to get some musical paper too! That's a great idea. I got sponges, brushes, gesso, pastels, and glue sticks today. Unfortunately, my plans to go to Blick got scuttled as Melly came down with Covid again. Sigh...i'm sure we're next as we share a very small house and Melly has been all. over. me the past few days!

Drat! So sorry to see your daughter has covid again. I sure hope you can avoid it, but if not, hope it's mild. Maybe it'll give you an excuse to stay home and start playing with your ideas.

Susan I would go with the acrylic paints, maybe a titanium white, payne's grey, and a couple of other colours that you like. Another item I use are water soluble crayons (Neocolors ||), you scribble with them and the use water to move it around into a light wash or use some gel medium to 'wet' them to paint with, the beauty of using the matte medium is that you are 'sealing' them at the same time so can use paints and pens over it as well. You can buy single and just start off with a couple of couple of colors. Also had Matte medium, I use Liquitex brand, as I have found that to be the best to paste collage down and over it to seal it so you can then paint over it etc. HOWEVER, begin watching a few youtube stuff to get started and start making a list of products they use.......... if a person mentions a product you already have on your list then put a mark by it....... when it comes time to buying something then look through your list and buy the products that you have marked for a few projects. I have some new aj artists in this week's muse so go check them out. :)

I stay home most of the time as I homeschool Melissa...but yeah it will give me time to play!!

We are going to go down to Blick Art Supplies and see the stuff in person.
Check the clearance stuff, then take a photo and buy the rest online. When I went to the Blick's store it was 1/3 more expensive than the same stuff at their online store. Ugh. I love their watercolor paper! We used it for homeschool, and it was fun to play with. I bought some of their 60lb/80lb drawing paper and we used that a bunch too. I liked to buy 12x18 and cut it in half because it's cheaper. I found their supplies to be high quality for the price. When you go to the store, feel the paper so you get an idea of the thickness of each weight. I bought paint palettes from Blicks online because they were a better price/quality than the dollar store or Target.

Another place that has some good paint storage solutions is the Lakeshore Learning Store in Henderson. Yep, geared towards teachers, but teachers with small classrooms who need to store stuff! It'll be kid patterned, but they have a fabulous table cover that's nice and thick and gives you confidence that it won't let paint ruin anything underneath. It's long lasting. I also bought their No-Spill Painting cups, but YMMV on whether you tip things a lot like me - or are neater. Somehow my clothing always catches my water cup and tips it over! Ugh.

I do use the Hobby Lobby Master's Touch Acrylic Paints for painting miniatures. I like it. I don't know how it would work for AJ, but I like the texture, and it's easy to thin when needed. I waited until it was on 40% off sale or I had a 50% off coupon - I don't recall which one. But it made it cheap to buy a bunch of colors and play with them.

I would say remember - it's fun! I bet you've done Art with Melissa over the years and had fun. Start there!

You can match the online prices at the Blick store if you tell them you are a "member" or something like that. I went to the Blick store in Chicago and loaded up a basket of goodies and I knew what they cost online, so I said something at the checkout about the price difference. I said I've purchased these things online and the prices are better and they did something about linking my online account to their store or something like that and then I got the same prices as online.

@Karen That's awesome! When I went in 2019 in Vegas, they just looked at me and said "So, order online." Totally rude! Jokes on them though - I looked them in the eye and said okay. Left everything but the clearance stuff on the checkout counter and they had to put it away. Hopefully, Susan will have a better experience than I did!

Oh man, sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with them! I have been there numerous times with my hubby and they've never been rude - weird, but not rude. That sucks.

I'm probably going to order online anyway, but I need to see and feel things in person first. This art stuff is all new to me! LOL

I think Michael is a member there - I'll check with him. I would just order it all online but I need to see and touch everything - this is all new to me.

I need to get thicker paper - I'm already seeing that. I found a lay flat journal at Walmart, but the pages inside were not 100lb or higher paper - it is curling like a mutha with just the gesso on it. UGH. I guess it will become a sketch pad for my anime kiddo!
