GTKY - January '13

With so many new folks here at The Pad.....let's do another installment of GTKY (Get To Know You!)

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why?

2) What is your all time favorite book?

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it?

4) Describe the setting around your computer?

5) What is usual bedtime?

I'll go first:

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? I loved the '80s and the music! (yea, I'm old.....do NOT comment on that! LOL)

2) What is your all time favorite book? I don't really have a FAV book but I am a total autobiography nut! Love reading about people!

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it? Best vacation was to San Diego to see my son graduate from Marine Corps training. Got to stay in Palm Springs and do some shopping, then to Long Beach and walk on the beaches, and travel through White Sands in New Mexico. Gorgeous landscapes!

4) Describe the setting around your computer? Usually at work on my desktop so I have my desktop, lots of paperwork, and my french posters on my wall. Very soothing!

5) What is usual bedtime? 10pm! Gotta get up at 5am Monday - Friday! Augh!

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? The 70's, for the music of course!

2) What is your all time favorite book? The Thorn Birds

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it? Our cruise to the Caribbean for our 10 year anniversary. It was just so nice to have everything paid for, decided, taken care of, etc.

4) Describe the setting around your computer? At home, I use my laptop in my big overstuffed chair in the living room. At work, I have a big U-shaped command center desk that I try to keep as neat as possible (and am currently failing at)

5) What is usual bedtime? Formally, we go to bed around 10. But I'm usually passed out in the chair or on the floor with the dogs by 9!

Here I go...............

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? The 80's. Growing up, being in school, this is when my love for music came. I bought a single (you know, those little black things with music on them) every week from my allowance. Having nothing to worry about... Looking back at the clothes I wore back then, hilarious!!!! But at that time it was just SO cool ;)

2) What is your all time favorite book? The Stand by Stephen King

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it? Every time when I go to Spain, doesn't matter which year, it always feels like coming home. If I had the chance I'd immigrate straight away!

4) Describe the setting around your computer? Laptop on the dining room table. I do always use a mouse, don't like the "fingerpad". Always nice to be in the room everyone else is too. Better than being up the attick where the "regular computer" is.

5) What is usual bedtime? Mostly about 11-12. Hate to go to bed, a waste of time ;) Always got lots of things to do and there never seems enough time in just one day....

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? NOT the 80s. HA! :D Ummm, probably this one. I feel like I'm growing a lot this decade and becoming a little more confident in my own skin. Plus the music and movies and books are so much better. :)

2) What is your all time favorite book? To Kill a Mockingbird.

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it? This is tough. Although our honeymoon to Hawaii in 2004 was seriously rad, I'd say that the trip Eric planned for us in 2010 was the best. He surprised me completely, just told me what time we were leaving and helped me pack a little, and the rest was a total surprise. He lined everything up including having my mom take the kids. We went to the Black Hills for a 4-day weekend and stayed at a completely gorgeous B&B, went snowshoeing and cross country skiing, shopping, a movie, eating at amazing restaurants. Our room had a private outdoor hot tub and that was beautiful with the snow falling. I think that was the best b/c we really, really enjoyed it - we have a busy life with our 3 kids and working full-time, and it was so good to get away and reconnect and I think we just appreciated it more than when I was 23 and had just gotten married. Plus having him surprise me with everything was fantastic! He put a lot of thought into it.

4) Describe the setting around your computer? My computer is currently a homeless laptop. It sits on a shelf in an end table in our living room along with my newest EHD (stupid laptop isn't big enough to hold anything, so my EHD has to be hooked up to scrap), mousepad, and wireless mouse. And a coaster. :) I usually sit in my comfy recliner to scrap or surf, with a blanket and Gus at my feet. :) Or on the couch, with a blanket and Gus on my legs. Heavy dog.

5) What is usual bedtime? Between 10:30 and 11:30.

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? This one! I'm living a great life, and having fun!

2) What is your all time favorite book?
Stephen King The Stand, I guess?

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it?
We've been some cool places, but I think my favorite was me and dh sneaking off to Toronto for one weekend without kids. We had a great time.

4) Describe the setting around your computer?
Bomb-like at the moment

5) What is usual bedtime?
I go to bed around 9-10 but I watch TV and/or goof around on my iPad before I go to sleep. I go to sleep at 11-12.

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? Tough one, musically the 80s, I love that my little one loves the 80s rocker music. For the rest most likely this one, I get to be a mom, how freaking awesome is that?

2) What is your all time favorite book? Black Dagger Brotherhood! When is the next one coming!?!?!?!!?! I need more of those steaming vampires!

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it? My Disney honeymoon! I want back!

4) Describe the setting around your computer? A FREAKING MESS!

5) What is usual bedtime? WHATEVER! It is seriously whatever fancy my dreams! I was kind of liking going to bed early while I had the flu, not that I had too many options.

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? Definitely now...what would I ever do without my iPhone and Google, LOL! Also, if I had to give people directions to places, I'd never see anyone again!

2) What is your all time favorite book? I have trouble picking a favorite book, but Bet Me by Jennifer Cruisie usually comes to mind first.

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? I think first trip my hubby and I took to Myrtle Beach is the best so far. Vacationing is so much more fun without kids!

4) Describe the setting around your computer? Mine is always precariously perched on the arm of my chair or my couch. I HATE scrapping at a desk, so I drag my laptop all over.

5) What is usual bedtime? Late. I always think, I'll just check FB one more time or one last glance at my blog reader and before I know it, it's one a.m! It's ok for now, because I put my oldest on the bus and the baby and I go back to sleep, but it's a habit I've got to break!

I am a home schooling mom, so I have this way cool double desk as a cubicle, my control pad so to say. Two long tables house my kids for school, with laptops. We have our game system in here for the kids to play when school is done also. One tall dresser for all the school supplies. Long windows give lots of light! Plants everywhere, I may live in the desert, but my house is a jungle!

10pm-unless I am in the middle of a scrap page or a good book, then all bets are off, and I am up for too too long.

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why?
This one is hard for me...there has been really good and really bad in every decade I've survived. I do think we're all a bit nostalgic for the decade that we grew up in so the 80s will always have a special place in my heart.

2) What is your all time favorite book?
A Ring of Endless Light by Madelaine L'Engle

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it?
I can't think of a specific vacation that was the best, but I loved living close enough to Vancouver Island that we could visit on a monthly basis. It's just so pretty there.

4) Describe the setting around your computer?
Piles and piles of paper.

5) What is usual bedtime?
In my plans 11 pm....closer to truth 1 am. I'm going to try to start striving for midnight...maybe that will be doable.

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? Probably the 90's

2) What is your all time favorite book? I also love To Kill a Mockingbird

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it? Our yearly South Lake Tahoe 4th of July trips are my all time faves...every year is great

5) What is usual bedtime? I'm a night owl so I'm usually up until 11pm...which is not good considering I'm up at 5am to get ready for work

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? 80's LOL I do not deny this

2) What is your all time favorite book? I loved Anais Nin's diaries. I read them quite a few times a looong time ago and recently dug them out again from the basement to put on my bookshelves so I think I will have to reread them. also the Chicagoland Vampire series.

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? Although I didn't live through it, I've always had a thing for the 60s... even as kid I loved the music, the fashions, everything from that era.

2) What is your all time favorite book?
To Kill A Mockingbird

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it?
Went to Kauai with my hubby this past June... no kids... no schedule... no responsibilities... just a week in paradise with my honey.

4) Describe the setting around your computer?
My laptop gets plugged in on my desk in the office, usually surrounded by my cameras, a couple of notebooks, bills that need paying, various other papers and notes. Sometimes I'll move to the recliner in the living room.

5) What is usual bedtime?
midnight-1am. I'm a night owl!

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? It's a tie between my college years and right now. I sometimes wish I could go back to my college years and relish the freedom we all had and enjoy having all my friends in the same town and seeing each other all the time. But, I truly love the life I'm living right now too and I don't really think I could go back to a time with the Internet, my iPhone or digi scrapping! :)

2) What is your all time favorite book? There is no WAY I could pick a favorite! I really loved The Other Boleyn Sister by Phillipa Gregory that I read about 10 years ago though because it was the first historical fiction book I read and didn't realize I would even like that genre, let alone love it! I also Loved The Book Thief, The Restoration Series by Terri Blackstock, The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, I mean... how could I choose just one?

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it? St. Kitts/Nevis in 2001/2002. We went just before Christmas and stayed for two weeks. My SIL lived down there going to Vet. school, so we have a free place to stay and did ever single touristy tour they had a available, went scuba diving almost every day, had plenty of time to lay around the beach and drink and eat. When we were getting ready to come home the locals were so surprised because they thought we lived there! The people there were nicer than anywhere I've even visited.

4) Describe the setting around your computer? I have a tiny desk between our kitchen and family room with a giant desktop and two great big monitors mounted to the wall (to save desktop space). I love my computer area! :)

5) What is usual bedtime? I should go to bed by 10:30, but it's usually closer to 11:30.

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? It has to be the 70's! I was young, carefree and had no responsibilities! I was living in PNG with my family and my parents were actually getting on for once, we had money for the first time in my childhood, the music was funky and the clothes outrageous! Best.time.ever.

2) What is your all time favorite book? All time favourite would have to be The Hobbit

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it? The best holiday would have to be the two weeks to New Zealand - the place is just breath-taking and the people are so lovely!

4) Describe the setting around your computer? Messy - that is all!

5) What is usual bedtime? 11 pm to midnight (sometimes 2am if I am reading) ... I'm a bit of a night owl, pity I have to get up so early to go to work haha!

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? I don't think I could pick a whole favorite decade. I'd have to mix and match – the fun of college and meeting DH in the 80's, DS just squeaked in there for the 90's, and then DD came along in 2002. And of course, joining TLP last year. :) I can't even nail down a decade for music. I'm just all over the place!

2) What is your all time favorite book?
Hmmm... In spite of being a voracious reader when I was younger, I haven't picked up a book in ages. I don't know if I could name a favorite, but I read a lot of sci-fi/fantasy and mysteries.

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it?
Probably one of the two cruises I took with DH in the early 90's. Just so fun and relaxing, and we met some really great people.

4) Describe the setting around your computer?
My desk is in our family room, and it's unusually clean at the moment (the desk, not the room). I'm in the middle of transitioning to a new computer, so I had to clear things off to make room to play musical monitors. I've still got a few piles of stuff set aside that I need to figure out what to do with, but I'm hoping to keep it reasonably neat. I tend to get buried quickly under various paperwork and all the bits I collect for my designing, so it will take some effort to maintain.

5) What is usual bedtime?
I'm trying to force myself to go to bed earlier. On school days I'm up by about 5:15am, so if I'm not asleep by about 10:30pm I'm tired and unproductive all day. Unfortunately, it's common for me to be awake until midnight or later.

1) What was/is your favorite decade, and why? The one we're in. And for nostalgia, the 80s.

2) What is your all time favorite book? Where The Sidewalk Ends

3) What was the best vacation you ever took, where, when, with who? What was great about it? Probably a week spent in Ohio with extended family at an inn. Big family dinners, hiking, camp fires. It wasn't the most relaxing vacation but the most memorable.

4) Describe the setting around your computer? I normally sit in a big comfy chair in the living room with my laptop. During the days it has a home on a small side table out of the way.

5) What is usual bedtime? When I'm not going through a bout of insomnia, around 11 or shortly after.
