It has been an awfully sad start to my year and I have missed hanging around the Pad. My Dad had some major health issues all through last year but seemed to be getting on top of them. A couple of days before New Years Eve, he collapsed and was taken to hospital, initially it was thought to be dehydration and possibly a lung infection. After a few days of testing, lung cancer was confirmed, a particularly aggressive form (apparently, years as a farmer is very bad for your lungs).
He was sent back to our local hospital and passed away a week later. My family and I were with him when he died, I wish I could say it was a peaceful death but lung diseases are not pretty at the end. He had been given the last rites, which comforted him enormously and he was heavily sedated after that so was unaware for the last few hours.
We were lucky that he was well loved by the local community, being heavily involved in the local football club. The funeral was a true celebration of his long life and made us so proud of him. It was a lovely and unexpectedly good way to send him off.
That's my not so little cry for the year, hopefully the rest of the year will be much more happier. Many happy memories will be scrapped in his memory.

So glad you and your family got to be with him and it sounds like you'll have many stories to share as you celebrate him though
