So I just got a Nikon D3100 which I love of course! But I have one problem. 75% of the time my boys have their eyes closed in the pictures because of the flash. Ideally I would shoot with no flash BUT this time of the year it's cold, cloudy and rainy here so we're indoor without a lot of natural light. I haven't had time to learn a lot of my settings yet but is there something I could do about that flash. It almost seems like it is going off just a split second too soon or maybe it's too bright? I don't know. I never had this problem with my other camera (not a DSLR).

Thanks girls!!! :flirty

You might experiment with manual mode and adjusting your ISO to compensate for the low light with no flash. I'm a Canon girl so I am not sure of the features on your Nikon. Is there a built in red eye - like a double flash that might be causing the closed eyes?

BTW, I'm sure someone who knows lots more about this stuff than me will have a better answer. :)

Are you talking about the pop up flash on your camera or do you have a speedlite?

I use my speedlite a lot during the winter and I just bounce it off the ceiling, wall, etc... But never aim it directly at my subject. It works great like that and I never have a problem with it hurting their eyes. If it's your pop up flash then you might could try a little gadget called the light scoop. I have never used it but I have heard it works good. It just goes over your pop up flash and causes it to bounce the way you would with a speedlite.

Here is that link

Ooooh that light scoop is perfect! One of the reasons I upgraded is so I would have the option of getting a speedlite but I don't really have the money for it yet!

I really need to work on getting better in manual. My boys are crazy so if I don't have the shutter speed fast enough I end up with a lot of blurry limbs! LOL
