With all this chat about school it got me to thinking...I'd really like to bring B's teacher and teacher's aide a little handmade gift on the first day. Something that would be of use to them. I know I've seen some cute things...notepads, cards, clipboards, etc. before, but I don't remember what or where. So...what inexpensive ideas have you seen? Something I can use all of my scrap goodies to make? Link me up!

I love the idea of the plant that grows many thanks for giving us the link.
In France we don't offer sometging for the first day but we give something for Christmas and at the end of the year

I've never given a gift on the first day either - but it sounds like a fun idea! We also just do Christmas and the last day of school.

Good stuff Karah! I love the flower pot and the candy jar! Thanks for the links!

Ooh I'm so glad for this thread because honestly until just a couple days ago this wasn't even on my radar. I didn't know that giving gifts on the first day was a thing to do really, but I do like the idea and think it sets a kindness for interactions with Bugga's teacher and shows appreciation from the off, so I'm considering it. Will be watching this thread. :)

I never do first day gifts mostly cuz i'm never on top of things enough! :P And when I was a teacher, I NEVER got first day gifts either, so I guess it's never been a biggy for me. I do a LOT for the teacher/class throughout the year though, so I don't think I'll start doing first day stuff.

Although... wouldn't it be cute to make some sorta altered hall/bathroom pass for the class?! ooooh! :D

A bow around the 10 boxes of crayons and 12 glue sticks I'm sending doesn't count? :giggle

I know it's not something that is traditionally done, but I just wanted to say from the start thank you for caring about my child and we appreciate you. I was a teacher for 5 years, so I know that often teachers are over looked and under appreciated. I was thinking about fixing up a clipboard...or just some cute little notecards, but I really like the idea of the hall pass...do pre-schoolers use a hall pass??

I was searching and I found this:

LOL Debra and Tiki!

I'm kind of with Lauren. I usually don't have my act together enough to do gifts. It's a sweet idea, though. I think those clipboards look so cute. Thanks for sharing the link!

All the other mom's will hate you! :giggle

You really think so?? I don't want it to be like that.

We've actually already gone and met with the director of the program and got to hang out in his class for a few hours, with the teacher, to see if it was a good fit for us. Everyone was just really nice, and his teacher seemed so genuine. I was thinking it would be a nice thing to do, but geez...you guys are making me think maybe not. I really don't want anyone to think I'm a brown noser wanting special treatment for my kid. I'm seriously reconsidering now!

jordan i wouldn't worry too much about it either way. i think if you do get around to getting some small token of thanks, then it will be appreciated. if you don't it won't be missed. either way. don't worry about what the other mom's think... debra is just a big mean bully like that :p

(and i'm totally kidding... debra is the sweetest thing ever & i'm just being silly)

Jo your a sweetheart anyway! personally you make me want to make one for my sons teacher, he has the same one as last year acuse hes in special ed for adhd! so i think ill take your cue and make all his teachers and aides something! even a happy jar for when the kids get unruly ( like a postive saying or a joke LOL) LOL they put up with SO much dealing with kids with special needs, i think doing something extra special would actually make his teachers smile as they are switching all the special ed kids to a new school yet again! ive seen parents give beginning of the year give gifts here and i dont think anything of it but say OO why didnt i do that LOL!

The happy jar is a cute idea! I'm sure the teacher's would love that! :) Boo for switching schools! :( They have all the special needs kids in one school?? That seems odd to me. Around here, they just make modifications, have IEP's and sometimes send them to another classroom for testing. The ADHD kids are in the regular classrooms. Only the severe and profound kids are in a separate class all day. Hopefully, it will be a positive change for your son and he will be in an environment better suited to his needs.

hes in a class with K-2 graders who have adhd who cant be in regular classrooms! Specially when they are still adjusting meds. My son cant deal with all the chaos of 20 kids in a class. He has 6 at the most in his and they are around the same age! So he sits better and gets more one on one help when he gets antsy! its really good for him! they have diff classrooms for the different needs of the children. it goes based on what the childs needs are.
im NOT happy about the school change. he was in a nice school and they send the special ed kids to the run down one in my town. LOL least my son does have the same teachers and they didnt take that stability away from him this coming year

When my kids were little, we would make them a little gift. We made one like the clipboard above, my kids teachers just love them.
Now I just have one in school. He will be starting school next week...and he will be a senior. I think he would kill me if I did somehting like that for the teachers..lol.
I think it would be cool to do one :) I know they will love it!!
