Finding kits in the store

There was a post about how to check if a kit is in the store for MOC. I couldn't find it when I searched. Probably entered the wrong terms for the search. I'm trying to organize my scrap supply and delete some older stuff. I'd like to know how to find out if an item is still in the store and/or if it was something I purchased (vs. a freebie). Is there a way to do this?

Either way I'm letting go of older stuff I might not use again but some stuff I am on the fence about. For example, at the moment, I am looking at a kit called Project 365 (pulls up a ton of items in the store) by Dawn Inskip. I don't remember having it at all, lol, but it's good still. However if it's not in the store, I am putting a little x by the kit name to let me know. I've been at this for days now. Bonus points for tips on how to get this done faster, lol.

holy wow... that's cool. I didn't know that existed! Will make searching for preview images for my folders easier too! But I guess kits that expired wouldn't show up or would they and the link would just go to a blank error page?

That's what I was told - if it's retired (no longer for sale) the link would not go anywhere.

I have deleted a few very very old things (like from before 2010) that I got as freebies when I was new to digiscrapping, but mostly I just buy bigger EHDs occasionally to house my ever-growing photo and digital supplies collections. I can't predict whether I will want to use something in the future (unless it is old boring poor quality stuff or definitely not my style; but nothing in my TLP stash can be described that way). So my "faster way" is to not do it. :D

My best tip for organizing a digistash is to replace the default blue folder icon with the kit preview, as I describe in this blog post I wrote years ago.

As for not using retired products during MOC, what I did is choose the arrangement view "By Date Added" so that my newest kits showed at the top and I only selected from those. On my Mac, while looking at my TLP files, I right click, choose Arrange By > Date Added.

Happy organizing!

I am not at the point yet where I am having to deal with retired kits when organizing. But, I have plans to buy stuff when the retirement sale comes around, so I know it will be an issue.

My idea to get ahead on this (which obviously may or may not work, but it sounds good to me!)...

Right now, I have folders for the few digistores I have supplies from... though my TLP folder is the only one with a TON in it. Then, in my TLP folder I have a separate folder for each kit I buy. I name it designer name- kit name. I do this so that everything from one designer stays grouped together. In each kit folder, I break it down into folders for elements, alpha, papers, journal cards, or whatever else might be with it. I do this as soon as I download a new kit so that I don't get behind.

My plan for retired kits is to place a big R after the designer name. This way the kits stay with the designer BUT I can tell if they are retired by glancing at the title. When the retirement sale happens, I am going to label anything I buy as I download it and also go ahead and check my stash and rename as needed.

I think I am fortunate in that I don't have years of stash to go back through and do this to and I am just keeping up with it from the beginning (thanks to everyone here saying how hard it is to go back and do).

I don't delete much like @michelepixels said, I just buy a bigger EHD. :giggle BUT, I did learn that it is a wise idea to take the time during the annual retirement sale to go through and add "_RETIRED" to the file folder of the stuff that is retiring. It saves me confusion AFTER I used something and go to link it up and can't find it in the store anymore. Lol!

I am with Karen and Michele.. I keep it all. Bigger hard drive for sure! I like the idea of tagging with retired, but I am too lazy. I would rather look it up piece meal :)

I just put z- before the kit name and it sorts to the bottom. My system is:

Store folder
Designer folder
Kit folder
Alpha for Kit folder

I am a kit scrapper so this is what works the best for me.

For Template designers, I delete everything except the PSD and the jpg preview for the kit and each template but other wise the folder hierarchy is the same.

I had a few things from a long time ago and when I joined the forum, I just checked to see if it was still in the store. Piece-meal for me, too. Speaking of retired products, is it okay to use them for TLP challenges? (Just a newbie question.)

Cheryl,
Here is the answer to your question:
"Challenge layouts must contain 75% TLP product (eligible product can be current or retired product from resident designers, or guest designer product that is currently in the TLP store). BYOC challenge layouts must have 90% current BYOC product from the current month's BYOC. Each page counts for one challenge (you cannot use one layout for multiple challenges)."

[It was only for the MOC that you had to use current product.]

25% can be from elsewhere, but templates are 15% so if you were to do a monthly challenge (not the template challenge or the MOC Challenges) with a template from another store you could, but that uses up 15% of non TLP product, if you were using things that were not TLP.

I hope that explains it better. Let me know if I can further assist :)

Thanks so much Christa! This is perfect and answers all of the questions I have/had. :bk

Instead of going for the name and then z or retired after, I literally make an entire folder and it's called RETIRED. I put ALL my folders and kits there that are retired, that way I never even see them during MoC and get sad. Does that make sense? Plus it's still in my TLP folder so I can find it at any time. I also use the preview large icons so the kit shows up in the folder view.

As to finding things easier in the store, when you have things like Project 365 and you know the designer name, go to "advanced search" type in project 365 and then choose Dawn from the Designer drop down. Another way to do this is just to use partial names.

For instance there was a TLP collab that was labeled one thing but then it was broken down into "people" "Places" and "things." By putting it ONLY by the designer, I can try any number of searches to narrow it down in case they put their part in the store and under a slightly different name. Make sense?

I tend to use retired kits a lot so that's why I keep them in the designer folder. In fact my "week in review" layouts I'm doing this year are with a retired kit because that is the kit that had what I needed and I love the colors. If I choose to do forum challenges, I can tell what kits not to use although I very rarely do challenges.

Isn't it nice that we all can do things our own way :yup

I have also found it helpful to add "freebie" to a folder name if I get a newsletter or blog freebie from a designer. For sure keep the kit previews in the folder with the artwork. That way you have the full official name of the kit.

re keeping things that are
or definitely not my style;

Well, I keep some of these things or designer items just for challenges. Otherwise, they get a Z before the name.. I'm afraid if they went into a folder of their own, it would be out of sight, out of mind...

I also add Freebie or Retired to end of the folder name, but I still keep it within the Designers folder.

My understanding is that retired items don't show up in Visual History? I could be wrong, but I know I've tried to find a few things I know are retired, and they don't show in the visual history.
For sure this is the case with retired designers, unless the collab has a current designer still.

You're right. I just checked and the items in my retired folder do not show up in the visual history.
