I just got off of the phone with my son, Jacob, and my heart is racing 100 miles a minute!

Our 18 month old granddaughter has had the stomach flu for a few days and last night while Jacob was holding her, she went limp and then had a seizure. They called 911 and the EMT's were there in a matter of minutes - thankfully by then, the seizure was over. They took her by ambulance to the nearest ER but there wasn't much that could be done other than to examine her. Her fever had spiked to 102 (under the arm) in a matter of minutes.

They took her to her primary doctor today and everything checked out fine - she's still not feeling well because she's got the flu.

Has anyone had a similar situation with their kiddos / grandchildren?

oh goodness - that is so scary! i have no experience with something like that - so i'm no help to you ... but i'm glad she's doing OK now - and really hope that it's nothing serious!

Oh I am so sorry, Jill. I know that's a really scary conversation to have with your son. I hope your granddaughter is feeling better soon.

I do want to reassure you that despite being scary, febrile seizures aren't uncommon in toddlers and are generally considered harmless, especially if they are short in duration. My kids run very high fevers when they are sick and my doctor (also my best friend) educated me about these because she felt it was only a matter of time before it happened to one my kiddos.

Thank you for taking time to share your post!! I pray it never happens to your little ones - and praying Harper will never go through it again either!!

It apparently happened to me when I was a kid. I turned out okay, well, you know, mostly, lol.

All four of my girls went through this. One of them had more than a dozen before they outgrew it.

It is VERY common. Super scary, but not necessarily dangerous.

There are parts of the brain that are insulated and the insulation takes time to grow. Not all toddlers grow this insulation at the same rate - some are slower than others. Until it does, some toddlers are more likely to have these type of seizures, but when they do, most outgrow them around the age of 5.

It's the fever spikes a low temp to a super high one in a rapid manner that causes these seizures.

We always made sure when our girls weren't feeling well - or even showed the slightest signs of a fever that we immediately gave them tylenol. I think this helped prevent them from having more.

It's super scary. no doubt. but all my girls outgrew and none developed any other seizure disorders.

This happened to me as a very young mom of a 2 yr old, no phone no car. It passed and never happened again in her life ( shes 24 now)

My grandson had several when he was an infant. He and his mom live with us. It was the scariest thing I'd ever been through. He seized for so long one night, he turned blue. Luckily we live about two minutes from the fire department, but that was a long wait. He's fine now and seems to have outgrown it. Our pediatrician said that a lot of times it wasn't just the high fever, but also it could be having a quick shift in temperature. We took him to a neurologist just to be sure everything was okay (he also had night terrors), but they said it really isn't anything to worry about.

I know that is easier said than done... the not worrying part. It has been about 3.5 years since Kennedy had one, but I still feel nervous about it when I think of it. At least now your son knows she might have that tendency and can watch for it. I hope she feels better soon.

Hugs!!!

Two of mine had them and they are a known side effect of fever in babies and toddlers.

One did develop an epileptic syndrome but I don't think it is related as she did not have a fit again from being a baby until she was 7.

As others have said, it is not seen as a worry unless it repeats several times.

I just had a friend of mine post on FB that his son had the same exact thing a couple days ago. My kids never had them, but some of my friends did and thankfully all said the same thing, that it's pretty common and generally not as dangerous as it would seem. How scary for your son and granddaughter though. I sure hope she's feeling bettter soon and that she never has this happen again!

wow, so scary indeed. glad all checked out fine, and that there are so many mamas here at the pad that can reassure you about this. hope she recovers quickly ... she has to get back to practicing her G's (assuming this is the little sweety that you are waiting for, to finally say your name!)

My son had two while he was little. After the second they did some studies to assure it was febrile seizures and not something else. They did confirm they were the benign febrile seizures that were suspected. They told me it was due to how fast the fever rose and they grow out of them by 5 years old usually. He never had any more after 3 years, but goodness it was so scary that first time!

Wow, I didn't know this existed as my two girls never experienced it. Glad to know it's not serious. Hope your granddaughter is much better soon.

I have no experience of these seizures, but had heard of them - I'm glad your Grand Daughter is ok and hope she continues to get well soon xx HUGS

No, how terribly frightening, I am so glad she is doing better, I would have totally freaked out too and I am not normally one to over react.

Jill so glad to hear she is feeling better. I can only imagine how scary that must have been.

Thank you for all of the words of wisdom and positive thoughts!!

TLP has such a caring community!:beat XOXO

so sorry to hear , Jill, but couldn't say it better than Laura did: these seizures are not uncommon....

I had Sarita lifting up a very very high fever in our first time traveling to Brazil, we had to drive 20 minutes to get to the doctor, she didn't get to seizure but remember the doc telling us that always when fever goes up, try to lower it but not to worry if the seizure happens, providing you have the right medical attention-

Something that seems weird to me is that in England, a medication called Dipirona (which in Brazil is to lower fever on the spot) doesn't exist.... I remember Sartia having very high fever when she was 6, I went to 7 pharmacies and they did not know what it was....
