I’m already seeing some great hybrid projects in the gallery. Please share what you’re making!

I just rebound my Christmas Junk DYD journal for the third time this weekend. :rofl The first book that I made with blank pages was perfect. Then I added SO much stuff to it that it was way too fat for the little binding I made originally. Lol. So I cut the spine and added a new FAT spine. Then it was too fat and looked stupid on my shelf. Ha ha ha! I made a fabric spine this weekend instead of the hard carboard ones before and made it slightly less fat. Now I think it's perfect. But how ridiculous am I? I just wanted to love it even when I saw it sitting on the shelf, so it was worth it in the end. I had to reprint my cover papers and the cover graphics again too. Lol. And I knew I wanted to do it, but kept putting it off, but, I kept thinking of goldilocks and the three bears... now it's just right! I had to re-stitch all the pages into each new iteration and was so worried I was going to wreck them. Lol.

When you work on a project like that, you want it to turn our just right! I would do the same thing! It looks wonderful and I love the new, softly curved binding. Glad all the re-doing didn't hurt your beautiful pages!

I can totally understand the feeling and I’m glad everything worked out great! Amazing project!

@Karen You mentioned in another thread about wanting to see the art journals I have been working on. They are not hybrid as such, no print outs from our designers here (my printer has been broken for some time :cry) so I am using what I have, like old book pages, painted papers, papers created using a gel plate, old magazine, package wrapping, fabrics, tissue paper etc etc. So if not allowed to be posted then let me know and I will get rid of it. :)

I love lots of texture and grunge, but I also love collage and glue books. I have made three small art journals this year so far, and I don't ever call them finished as I often will come across an image, or an idea to finish off one of the pages in one of the many journals I have. Sometimes I will just take out all my bought and found word arts and quotes and slowly go through and find things to stick them into various journals, but most of time they are all ongoing projects. :)

This is one that I experimented with using a 'master board' to start my journal off. I used PVA glue to collage papers and stuff onto an A4 sheet of copy paper. While the glue was wet I added various acrylic paints using a palette knife, mixing it in with more glue as I worked. I really like how it turned out actually, not 'pretty' in any sense, just pure grunge! lol! When it was dry I did add some paint splatters to it as well. When that dried I then tore the page into three narrow pieces across the width of the page, and then folded over to create the journal. The picture below shows the original master board and then torn up with some other old book pages and such to form the original journal.

At this point I SHOULD HAVE SEWN IT TOGETHER!!!!! lol! BUT I decided to work on collaging more stuff onto pages etc etc. so that when I did finally go to sew it together it was VERY thick and very hard to get good hole pierced into the spine! pffft!! I think I might have said 'damn' a couple of time!! :lol:madd After the repeated holes being pierced, when I finally was able to get a needle and thread in there it did tear so I then had to go back and find pieces of light cotton fabric to glue to the spine area! lol! and start that all over again. I finally managed to finish it but I gotta say I had some pretty sore finger tips at the end of it!

But, you do live and learn I guess! So here is the final 'finished' version, using a thin piece of leather (which has been in my stash for like 20 years!!!) and a little silver buckle (that once belonged on a pair of white boots that I wore back in the 80's!!!!! :rofl:rofl:rofl) to make a closure for the journal. And this one is pretty well finished as I don't think I can fit anything more on those pages and I won't be putting too much word art or quotes in there, I think I just love the whole abstract art about so will leave it as is. All up there are 28 pages (counting the front and back covers).

What a stunning journal Karen, loving the pretty colours you have used here and I can totally commiserate with the spine problems!!! lol!! But you did a fantastic job in making the new one! :wub

I also really loved reading through your tutorial on how you made it, pretty much the same steps I do for mine, except for the one I mention above where I didn't punch the holes at the right time! lol! I so wish my printer was working but money it tight at the moment, but in a way I am happy to be slowly using up all the papers I have collected over the years! lol!

I loved creating this little envelope box. Those pandas are so cute!
Oh wow Ann-Sofie, what a super cute little project! You did such a fabulous job in making that! and what a gorgeous little gift it would make for a new born as well! Brilliant job! ♥

Oh my gosh! I love this so much! Now that I've seen it... I want to TOUCH it and feel all that marvelous texture!! I absolutely love that you still have a buckle from your boots from the 80s and that you used it for your fun closure too! That's the best when you hang onto some random bit forever and finally have the perfect use for it! :D Time to buy yourself a thimble for all those thick pages, huh? :giggle Thanks for taking the time to share. I loved getting to see your work! :agree

All your projects are amazing ladies !
The toner cartridges in my printer are at the end of their life but still print a little (which is enough for the children's schoolwork), but this is not satisfactory for my scrapbooking projects. So I have to wait to change them.
What's more, I had to send back my cutting machine (which I got for Christmas) because it makes stray cuts and ruins my entire sheet.

I love the grunge and how every page is so different! This is really inspiring -- I've been making a master board with leftover stickers and wondering what I'm going to do with it when I finish it. I also love all of your experimentation in making these with the use of mixed media, how you bound it, etc. To me, that is the joy of hybrid and hands on creating.

Thanks Dawn! :) I have found I really love making smaller journal/glue books. These are not as artsy as the one above but it is very much a lot of collage work which I really enjoy doing. I relax in the evening by binge watching shows on my pc and just playing in my glue books, no extensive tools needed, just my glue stick! I love to sit and rummage through my boxes of papers, fabrics and scrap pieces, looking for that 'right' piece of paper (or lace)! lol!

This a picture of just the four I made last Nov/Dec. None of these are actually 'finished' as such, I tend to just add to them as I find different things or come across some word art that would suit a page. No rushing, no stressing, just play when I want to. :)

and a few of the pages from it. This is a super journal to make and so easy with very little sewing! lol! This would be a great idea for you Dawn, to for your master board! :)

What a bummer about your fun new cutting machine! I hope they get you a good one and give some extras for the hassle!

This is so weird that you mention a master board. I never heard of that before, but just LAST NIGHT I did an art journal lesson online and did my first master board and then cut it up into ATC sized cards. Lol. I think it's such a fun idea and I think I will keep a big piece of cardstock on a side table for just this purpose now. :agree And you're right, it would make such fun art journal pages! Then you're not starting with a blank page ever!

These are fantastic! I love the term "glue book"! What a fun way to add some creative time in while watching TV. Hmmm... I might need to implement this! :agree

Thanks Karen, what I failed to mention in my last post above, the bottom pics are from the little accordion glue book pictured in the photo above, it's the little brown one on top........... I use some old elastic wrapped in a piece of material, just roughly stitching up the one side, to make the little closure. :) I only do one or two pages in the evening and it's my wind-down before heading out to spend some time with hubby before getting ready for bed. :)
