@BevG I was thinking it had something to do with waiting period since back in those days about the only place you could get married without a waiting period was Vegas! I know at one time there were places that required the blood test and a 10 day waiting period. Wedding planning was a lot different back then but license/blood tests were always at the top of the list for many of my friends! My cousin worked in another county in Ohio but was getting married in the county where we grew up. Her DH lived in the county where they would be living after they got married since he was already working there. It was an hour away. They had fun scheduling the blood work and getting the license in our county and it was a 10 day waiting period in those days. Both of them had very little time in at their jobs and what vacation they did have was going to be for the honeymoon. Somehow they did get the trip to our county in to get the license (I think in those days you had to get the license in the county you were getting married but don't quote me on that. Many of my friends had those issues since they were getting married "at home" but no longer lived there.)

I can imagine the hoops you had to jump through getting married in an entirely different state!

I got married in Mexico in 1971 (long story), our marriage wasn't valid in Virginia until we'd cohabited together for "x" amount of time ... and then it was a "common law" marriage. We had some issues with it when my then husband joined the military and much later when we divorced. It never occurred to us to get re-married in VA ... but we were young and dumb, and VA made you jump through all kinds of hoops back then (blood tests, etc.)

Oh @BevG What a story!!

Also, I totally didn't know that doctor's visits were a thing for marriage licenses! Wow.

@Memaw2Wm My Canadian aunt got married in Las Vegas. They didn't recognize it in Canada (I can't remember why at the time). It worked out great when she "divorced" a year later because they weren't considered married.

Oh my ! Some oil these stories, especially the wedding ones! I have enjoyed reading them.
I have lots of memories - some from when I was two and traveled on a plane. I guess it was such a big deal that I remember it. But one of my faves is of my grandfather. One time he accused me of breaking something and although I strongly denied it, I still got a spanking for it (the only time he spanked me). Later, he found out that I wasn't the one to break the item and he came in crying and apologizing for spanking me. To me it took a big man to admit to that and for crying in front of me.
