Does your family (and/or extended family) have a favorite dish or food that is a must-have at gatherings? Is it your Aunt Peggy's caramel rolls, your brother-in-law's pasta salad? Something entirely original? Something simple or store-bought, but still a necessity?

For our family, it isn't a "family gathering" unless there are potato chips and "Uncle Dan's" dip. It is a packet of seasoning we get that is basically a ranch dip, but they call it "original southern." We mix the packet in with sour cream and mayo (only Hellman's/Best Foods) and it is a go-to dip. There have been family fights over it being missing at a function. Silly really, but it is our one main family tradition. :giggle

I was mixing up a batch tonight and had to ask you all if there is something that is a basic requirement for get-togethers.

Bonus points if you share the recipe.

Our "must have" is macaroni & cheese - usually mine, but I don't actually use a recipe, so it's a little different every time, but never disappoints.

for summer BBQs everyone loves my mom's potato salad. and for parties in general everyone loves to have an excuse to eat a seven layer taco dip with tortilla chips. it goes quickly! and if you're late to the party you miss out.

Chocolate Eclair Desert
2 - (3.5 ounce) packages instant french vanilla pudding mix (can use sugar free)
1 - (8 ounce) container frozen light or fat free whipped topping (cool whip), thawed
3 - cups 2% or skim milk
1 - (16 ounce) package graham crackers
1 - (16 ounce) tub prepared chocolate frosting

  • Line the bottom of a 9x13-inch pan with graham crackers.
  • In a large bowl, combine pudding mix and milk; stir well. Mix whipped topping into pudding mixture. Spread half of mixture over graham cracker layer. Top with another layer of graham crackers and the remaining pudding.
  • Top all with a final layer of graham crackers and frost with chocolate frosting. Refrigerate at least two hours before serving to allow the graham crackers to soften.

We have cake cones, required for birthdays and celebrations. Then, my husband makes pumpkin Nutella cheesecake for thanksgiving and Christmas the past few years.

Growing up, we were not near enough to any other relatives for get-togethers, and I don't think this is a thing here. At least, none of the family gatherings I've been to since moving to Denmark have involved people bringing food. So I can't even imagine this. But I guess kinda related... the kids' preschool has an international week every year where they ask parents to bring food in on the last day, and I always bring mac 'n' cheese.
