Experimenting with Styles?

Do you ever experiment with styles or do you have a basic style. I started my WITL with the Artsy Journal templates by Liz. It's been fun, being artsy and journal it feels like I can break the rules. My layouts I've done for June events have mostly been Art Journal.
I'm doing photos tomorrow and will have a new book to make. I'm not sure if I will try a new style (my MOC was pretty different as well) or go more basic. How did you find your style?

It's funny you mention this Carilyne because I have been thinking a lot about this very thing lately. I have a style that varies some, but mostly I like doing pages that have a good amount of white space & that are rather organized and tidy ... oh and have lots of elements, but not overly clustered (only because I am not very good at it). I feel like all the new designers that have come here to settle at The Lilypad this year (and all the new members and designer CTs) have really inspired me to try different things more often. I'm usually not that good at trying a new style ... but I do like to try. I think there's so many more full page scrappers here and I am in awe at how they can work a full page. Something that does not come easy to me at all. So yes, I do try to play around with different styles and 100% inspired by the amazing talent here in our very own gallery.

What kind of book are you planning on making? Congrats on challenging yourself to do WITL and doing it in a new style. That's pretty awesome. And I've enjoyed seeing those WITL artsy pages! :) Very unique approach!

Thanks Jenn -- I appreciate your comments. They are not the norm but the templates are so fun to play with.
The next book is documenting the decisions I've made and starting a new chapter in my life.
I need to do some more scraplifting -- and I love Fiddle Dee Dee's' templates. Someday I need to branch out on my own though. I've always had eclectic tastes and a little rebellious about rules so my layouts are not always the norm. Oh well that's me. I like clean and simple but then it seems there is space I need to fill. LOL

We are sort of opposites ... I have such a hard time filling all the space. :)

As for branching out on your own ... maybe find a few scrappers whose style appeals to you right now and study their style and pages ... figuring out what it is you like and try to apply some of that to your pages?

But there's nothing wrong with using templates. In fact if I am doing a book .... 99% of the time I use templates. It relieves so much pressure/stress over coming up with new designs/compositions for each page and it just makes it so much more cohesive.

I love to try different styles, some work for me and some not so much lol. I think that's the best part about being a Guest Polly...I get to work with stuff that is outside of what I would normally. It's challenging and fun!!

I would describe my pages as clean, photo-centric, on the simpler side, more space than filled, smaller clusters, a smidgen of a story at least and template based. :giggle

I had to become comfortable with what I liked on my pages and how they looked, before I knew what my style was.
Someone described my pages for me, and it clicked that those descriptive words were my style. I realized not to force my pages to be something that I am not. Occasionally a few make me scrap outside my norm (pocket/AJ/Heavy Clusters/Full on Filled/some MOC), and those tend to be fun because it's a challenge. An occasional challenge, not forced everyday, is fun. :)

I see your pages as very artistic, Carilyne. I feel like you have started to figure out what you want your pages to represent, and you are getting more comfortable with your choices. At least from what I can see here in the forum, and in the gallery. :) I agree with Jenn... templates might be a great start for Albums. Twist, turn, combine, so many possibilities.

I am inspired by the layouts I see. But seems my style is the look of a old fashion paper page, which I tend to like in others it seems

I do like to experiment with different styles, but I think I found my style just by scrapping a lot . . . and while scrapping a lot, trying not to think about it too much. Just creating and doing what I like, not thinking about how it will be received or what the trends or, etc.

I feel like I'm flexible and can scrap in different ways, but the full page style is definitely what I consider my natural or go-to.

I was just writing you. I haven't done many Dressed Down ones. And I'll get back to yours soon --you've become my standby. I love to scrap that way -- what I like and not worrying about the rest. I get frustrated if I try to get it perfect. I had period of time where I thought I needed to please the crowd, but no more.

That's exactly what you need to do, Carilyne!

I create the Dressed Up and Dressed Down versions to appeal to those two different styles primarily . . . but I hope they are always viewed as a starting point and not a hindrance!

I definitely like to border a page & I like big titles. I prefer not to use just one picture. I try everything at least a few times. I really need the challenges each month because my brain does not always work unless challenged. I have a really hard time scraplifting every month. It's so hard to make another person's style mine & I never feel like I do the original justice.

Yes the challenges definitely help although I should do some more than once. Scraplift I will sometimes enjoy trying to make it close to the original, but looking through the threads some people do as inspiration and have the same colors or elements but look totally different. I want to try that sometime.

yes, Cath ... you have definitely developed your style and do it very well. I agree with Carilyne. I can usually spot one of your pages before I see the member name. :)

I just checked out your gallery @carilyne and you nailed it...gorgeous pages. I'm all over the place when making layouts but would like to do more white space ones, definitely not my strong suit. I thought the MOC stretched my skills; it was a great experience.

I might have a style - I definitely prefer multiple photos, photos as the focus, and a moderate amount of embellishment - but I haven't consciously given it much attention because scrapbooking has mostly been purely for me.

It is fun to try different styles. That was one of my favorite things about MOC and sometimes it happens with monthly challenges too.

you are one of the people that is inspiring me big time this week. i love your style so much!!!

I don't know what my style might be but most of my pages are either artsyANDsimple for travel albums or Project Life. I've given myself a year to take time off from many of the travel ones and play here at TLP with any challenges I can manage. For the most part, I do not bother to do one photo layouts unless it is a single photo of a grandchild. I don't like a lot of elements and would never use a button or flower unless I had to. I really do like transfers/blendables/rub ons..things that give a background texture without being a real focal point. Oh I do like borders a lot too. Framing a page finishes it for me.

When I first started digital scrapbooking in 2006, I was dealing with vintage photos. I didn't want to go through creating a layout with teeny photos, I wanted to see those forgotten relatives up close, and so I enlarged them as best I could, depending on condition, etc. I found that this "style" if you want to call it that, has continued with me thru the years, but I really didn't think much about it. So generally now, if I scrap with a photo, 9 times out of 10, it is going to be large. And the rest of the time, I do art journal layouts, my preference. I love clutter, I love blending. I really and truly admire those who do minimal layouts that are so stunning. But when I try that approach, I always feel like something is missing and it just isn't me.

@carilyne Have you watched any of @gonewiththewind videos, Watch Cheryl Scrap on YouTube? They are awesome, I started watching them, and I can't stop! Cheryl's clusters are to die for, she definitely has a talent and her own style. And like Cheryl, I've been trying to add a few word strips onto my layouts. So cute!

I am still new and experimenting with style. Do you guys try to make stylistic choices for a particular book or series and then switch? Just throw it all together?
