I am so sorry! I was so tired and out-of-it yesterday that I totally forgot to say what the surgery WAS!
My daughter's been complaining of a pain in her side for several months now. It was especially bad after she did some side crunches on a Jillian Michael's DVD. Then she complained of something that sounded like a UTI (urinary tract infection). So I took her in to see her doctor on Thursday. Her doctor thought she might have a bad gut-flu bug going around, but at the same time, Nerys' abdomen was really painful when touched. So the doc asked me to bring her back the next day for a re-evaluation of the symptoms. Her blood test came back as negative for extra white blood cells which would indicate an infection.
(note: my daughter is terrified of needles, and almost fainted when they took her blood for the test)
Her doc ordered a CT scan on Friday after we saw her. For four hours, Nerys was freaking out about having to get an IV in her arm (needle!), crying, shaking, having a nervous breakdown about it. Finally it was time for the CT scan. The woman who gave her the Hulk-green IV was soooo unexpectedly good, my daughter was visibly relieved, but still not happy about it.
Turned out if we'd let her only do the Barium drink, the doctors would not have found that her appendix was swollen, infected and needed to come out.
We drove directly from the CT Scan lab to the hospital. Checked her into Short Stay. Then my husband arrived, and I went home with my son for a few hours. He stayed with her when she into surgery around 9pm. I went back to the hospital at 11:30pm and stayed overnight with her. Meantime, our son managed to accidentally break a big hole in a utility door in the hall-way while we were gone. Great.
The surgeon spent some extra time with her in the operating room. What is hilarious is that he was playing "Wayward Son" in the operating room as they wheeled her in. As she started going under she started dreaming about Hunting on Supernatural with Dean and Sam Winchester!
She's home now. Her abdomen hurts whenever she laughs or coughs, which isn't good because my husband keeps cracking her up. Otherwise she's fine, but she's going to miss at least one week of school, maybe two, depending on how she heals. Of course, if she misses two weeks of school, THAT means she'll have a FIVE week winter break!
And that's it!
Thanks so much for all your well-wishes. Between y'all, our family and her friends, it hasn't been as upsetting as it could have been. It's mostly the bills that we're waiting for to get upset about.
