Elements etc on top of Journaling

So many times I'll see a layout that is just gorgeous, but then there's all kinds of elements papers, etc on top of the journaling. I get that it's trying to mimic a paper layout, but on a paper layout, you could flip a flower or ribbon out of the way to read the journaling. On a digital printed page, not so much.

So do you over hang elements etc on your journaling? If so, what do you do when you print the layout?

I scrap and then journal... many times I try to leave it viewable but understandable. Part of a work or a word is missing/covered, but I try not to cover too much. That defeats the point of my journaling.

I try so hard not to cover too much of my journaling, but when it does happen it drives me nuts!

I tend to cover most of my journaling, especially when it is very personal or crosses into therapy/healing areas. (learned the technique in one of my first Tangie classes, write like mad then cover it with gesso) I do save the journal layer(s) by itself along with every flattened PS file. This gets printed (or sometimes photographed) to tuck behind a printed page.
Sometimes, I don't bother with what got covered up. I let it be a mystery to future readers. Usually including myself as my memory storage/retrival has issues.
Once printed, I often go back (soon or later) and add more writing. Lovely blank backsides are becoming my favorite doodle/journal site, lol.

Nope, don't cover up my journaling at all. Drives me nuts when I see a layout that does. My journaling is there to tell the story of the photos so that anyone that picks up an album when I'm not around will know what the story is. If it is hidden, it defeats the purpose of having it on there. Might as well leave it off if it is covered up.

Hmm... generally speaking, I do not cover it up. I don't mind if a bow or string or stitching may cover up part of a word or something, as long as it is still readable. But for my art journaling, I have absolutely covered up the journaling. Those are for me, and some stories and emotions are just not meant for social media. I keep them on the page because I needed to let them out in a semi-permanent way. The text layers stay in tact and I keep my psd files, but they've been moved to the background, partially hidden or whatever. Not visible to the flattened image or printed photo.

I cannot figure out the draw to those pocket like templates, where it looks like you can pull the paper out of a pocket or from behind a photo to continue reading the story.... because it's digital, and you can't! Gah!

I have been guilty of covering journaling at times - so I can get a more realistic look. It bothers me to see journaling on top of 3 dimensional elements like flowers, beads, etc. However, I do try to only cover small portions so that people can still get the gist of the story.

I don't mind a word or string of words being hidden or slightly hidden as long as you can still get the gist of the story. If it's too personal, I don't include it on layouts I'm posting on social media or in galleries but do leave it on when I'm printing for my own albums. When I was a paper scrapper, I often put journaling on a separate piece of paper and stuck it behind the layout in the page protector. I prefer photo books these days, so that method doesn't work as well for me as when I printed single page prints.

Yes, I sometimes have elements hanging over the edges of text, or the middle of the first or last sentence.

I don't mind if a ribbon, or the corner of a flower is hiding part of a word. It reminds me of that weird email that gets passed around talking about if you can read this (Yuo cna porbalby raed tihs esaliy desptie teh msispeillgns.). I figure if my sentence is "We had a blast at the park" and "the" is half covered, you can still read it. I don't cover all my text though. I'm not fond of that look for my pages.

I don't change it for printing. So far, I haven't had any problems with reading the details.

This is me too! If there's a bead over a few letters or a ribbon sticking over a little bit but you can still understand the word, it's fine with me. I like the 3D effect.

I don't mind to have an element or something over part of the journaling here and there and long as important words are not covered, like the where or the date. Like others said, as long as the gist of the story is there. It drives me bonkers to have journaling on top of an element that's supposed to look dimensional.

Usually no - but sometimes there is a template I am using and it does obscure a bit of the journaling. I will often nudge the journaling to be more visible. I don't like more than a few words to be covered up. Like many have mentioned above, I think as long as the gist of the story is there I am OK with it.

I have no problem with one or two words being covered by a bow string or similar. That happens often on my pages.

I'm not really much of an AJ'er but I imagine I absolutely would cover up some of those stories.

And 100% agree that text should not float on top of flowers, buttons or other dimenisonal stuff. Always have to have the journaling under! :)

The journaling is very important to me, so I never let more than an unimportant word or two be hidden. But I do like to have the nearby flowers or ribbons or whatever touch the journaling.

What looks worse in my opinion is when journaling is placed on TOP of elements that realistically couldn't easily be written on.

Ha ha ha! I see that sometimes and I'm like... "how am I supposed to be nosy and read your innner most thoughts if you cover them up!" :giggle I am very conscious on not covering up my journaling. I am super skilled and making text boxes that fit the exact space I have left, so that I can read my journaling later. I don't care if a little part of a word is covered as long as it's obvious what it's supposed to say.

So do you over hang elements etc on your journaling? If so, what do you do when you print the layout?

I have two answers to this because there are 2 different reasons why I put "stuff" on top of journaling. If I post a LO with elements over my journaling, it's because I don't want what I've written to be read online. Perhaps it's a location, a name, or maybe it's just an art journaling page with some of my feelings and I don't want y'all to think I'm super emo. ;) So I put elements over journaling or I blur it before posting online. On MY version (either just on my HD or in print), I remove the elements and delete the blurred text layer. (I double my text layer, hide one of them, and then rasterize and blur the text I don't want seen before I save for Web.) Easy peasy.

Or, if there are elements over my journaling it's because I don't care about the exact words of my journaling; I'm more concerned about the "feel" of the page. If I cover up part of DD's name, I can see the first letter and know the word is her name cuz the page is about her. To use my kids' school term, there should be enough context clues to put that together lol.

Very well said Sara!

I agree I don't have a problem with items over journaling, It is for the artist of that page to do what feels right at the moment. I really like what @Mylinn does! I'm totally going to use the back of pages when they get printed off!

I don't mind covering up a bit of a word or two in my journaling but the gist of the journaling has to be clear. I don't want to look back at a LO yrs from now and try to figure out what I was trying to say.
