I'm considering the Dyson vacuums as a gift to me. I looked at the normal upright, no ball and the ball kind. The ball kind seem to have a paper filter on the side of the ball. Do those suckers get full of hair and stuff?

The info says no filter and belts to worry about. The upright has two washable filters. The ball one only seems to have one washable one and that paper thing on the side of the ball.

Any help from Dyson owners?

I have two American Eskimo dogs that shed like large cats (i.e., a ton) and have gone through several different vacuums in the past. I got a Dyson last year and I LOVE it. I have the Dyson 41 Animal - it is awesome. Easy to maneuver around with the ball, great suction, easy to take apart and clean, no filters. So far I'm loving it! I haven't had a problem with hair/fur getting stuck in it. This is my first upright (I've always had canisters in the past), and my only complaint is that it is heavy using the upright and my back gets sore if I do my whole house in one session. But I would definitely get another Dyson, I might spring for a canister Dyson at some point.

I love my Dyson. I balked at the price so my husband went out and secretly bought it for me. We have a large dog and two cats and therefore neverending hair. It does an amazing job of cleaning our floors. We have mostly hardwood with a few small rugs and the only thing I would change would be possibly getting the canister instead of the upright, just because I think it would be easier to use. Have had the vacuum for about a year I think and it has never gotten clogged with hair or anything.

We have had a dyson and absolutely loved it. However, we got new carpet and it was causing damage - fraying the threads and getting caught. Before you purchase, make sure that the carpet you own is ok to use with it. Dyson cannot be used with Mohawk silkstrand and several other mohawk high end thick carpets. We contacted Dyson and they confirmed that it is known for its suction and is not compatible with all high end carpets. We also checked with the carpet manufacturer and they do not recommend Dyson.

Thankfully we don't have high end carpet. ;) We have the regular Dyson and I. Love. It. It sucks up a lot (to the point where it grosses me out if I don't vacuum more than once a week rotfl), it's easy to move around, and the filters are super-duper easy to clean. Every like 6 months we just rinse with water and leave outside to dry thoroughly.
My brother and SIL have the ball and I've used it--I don't care for it. IDK...it moves TOO easily, if that makes sense. I like our normal Dyson much more.
BOTH styles pick up animal hair. (The reason I used my brother/SIL's ball Dyson is because I asked them to bring it to my parents' house. They've had at least one cat the whole time they've lived in their house, so there is literally 30 years of cat hair rolling about. And TBH, my mom's vacuum just can't cut it. Anyway, I used my brother's ball Dyson on my parents' carpet AFTER my mom had used her Eureka and it got a full canister of hair. YIKES!)
DH couldn't believe I wanted a Dyson, but I kept hearing such good things about them. I used Christmas money a few years ago and we bought one. I'm so glad--and DH is too. He's actually vacuumed with it and he walks around like an infomercial: "This is so easy to use! It just sucks up all the dirt! Look how FULL that canister is getting!" lol

I was at Target the other day and contemplated getting one. The one that's before the Animal one was on sale for like $399, which seemed pretty good. We'll probably wait till after Christmas to see if it drops some more. I have two big dogs (Shepherd and Shepherd/Lab mix) and a teeny Chihuahua so there's LOTS of dog hair in here!

Keep your eyes on Woot.com for one. They sell them refurbished for $200 (good as new!). That's where I got my current* one.

*My old one only died because it was in the basement when the main line backed up and there was 4" of water on the floor. It actually still turned on, but it sounded funny, and I'm not sure what all kind of bacteria was in that water so I dismissed it.

I have a regular Dyson. I got it last year around Thanksgiving when Dyson had them on sale...they almost never have sales. We don't have pets, so I didn't need the animal one. Anyway, I LOVE it!!! It picks up everything so well...so much better than any other vacuum that I've ever used before.

We have had our Dyson for just over a year. Got it off Woot for $200. We have the canister, and I loved it up until this week when the turbine head died! I called them and they are sending a new head though, so that's pretty rad. The thought of not being able to vacuum my rug for 10 days makes me want to cry.

It does still work amazingly on our tile and wood floors though!
