Do you use a DSLR for PL or 365?

Hi. I just found out what my tax return will be and hopefully we will get it in the next few days. I was planning to get a nice new little point and shoot for PL. I am NOT a photographer but I've always been interested in learning. Now I'm considering a DSLR. I was wondering if any of you use one for PL or 365. Do you find it easier to have a small camera for this? Does the size of a DSLR get in the way of you using it for daily type photos? Are you willing to be inconvenienced by the size because the quality of the photos is so much better? I'm trying to picture how this new camera will fit into my daily photo taking. I already started a thread in the photography pad asking for suggestions of good point and shoot cameras and affordable DSLR cameras. Thanks sooooo much! -Roni

i use a mix of whatever... my P&S, my phone, my DSLR. whatever is handy at the moment! :)

Same here - I mix it up. Some DSLR, some iPhone, some point and shoot. I'm embracing the funkiness of it this year. LOL

I am the same as Amy, pretty much whatever I have that is handy at the moment.

I LOVE my DSLR though and it is definitely my camera of choice. My p & s hasn't been used much lately, it has mostly been my big camera or my phone....

For PL I'm using my phone A LOT. I love my DSLR, and I still use it often, but for capturing the little everyday stuff I find that my phone is often most convenient.

I don't know a whole lot about cameras, but I do know there are some that are able to do more than just your basic point and shoot, but not fully a DSLR. Some even have options for different lenses. I have a friend who has a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 that she loves... you might want to check out something like that.

This year I'm about 99.9% iPhone and I LOVE it, SO easy w/photo stream. But I did P365 in 2010 when I didn't have an iPhone and used a combo of my P&S and my big camera. (It was close to DSLR but not quite.) I mostly used my P&S simply because of it's size I could actually keep it on me. When I was home I'd use the big camera. My P&S did take a bit of a beating from spending that year in my purse because I couldn't be bothered by keeping it in a case. I really just wanted to be able to grab and click quickly. That's why I love the iPhone camera, it's almost always in my pocket and if not it's certainly not far from me. ;)

Whatever you choose will be great, it's all about capturing the moment and remembering the stories!

I'm a mix of whatever camera is available--iPhone, son's iTouch, P&S or my DSLR. It just depends on what is closest at hand.

And I second Lynette's suggestion about the Panasonic. That was my camera before I got my Rebel a year ago. Now it's dh's camera. It's the closest thing to a DSLR, without the lenses. Great, great, great camera!

Lately I've just been using my iPhone b/c it's the most convenient. I do use my DSLR on occasion.

if my iPhone wasn't with me all the time, it would force me to use something else!! mostly it's a mix though...weighing heavily in favor of the iPhone!

Totally a mix! In fact, I sat down to upload my photos yesterday and I had to take them from my DSLR, my P&S, my Blackberry, and my iPod Touch, LOL. Lots of sources of photos. I love them all and they all serve a purpose.

I'm probably 80% iPhone, 20% DSLR. If I have the big one with me, of course I'll use it. But I find it's pretty easy to get the everyday shots at work or at a restaurant with the iPhone. I also use iPhone pics sent to me by my kids to get their activities captured in here too.

I seriously want a DSLR but I decided to get a point and shoot for convenience sake. I'm thinking I'll get the Nikon Coolpix P300. It has manual settings and if I remember correctly the aperture will go up to a 1.8. Due to the sensor size it still won't have very narrow depth of field but I think it will be a compromise and it is under $300. DH promised that if next year this time I'm still taking lots of photos I can get a DSLR. I'm still disappointed but it will be good to be able to easily carry a small camera at all times. After trying the DSLR in the store I'm able to see why so many of you love them! I'm still feeling torn if you couldn't tell! Thanks so much for all of your helpful feedback. -Roni

Roni, I'm thinking about getting a nikon coolpix too! Here in Brazil cameras are way too expensive, so, a DSLR is still impossible for my budget....and I've been reading some reviews about the p500, it looks a great camera....

Ok. Change in plans. I'm getting a digital slr. I'm so excited! I'm buying the body from someone here at TLP and I found a really affordable used lens at my local camera store. It is the same lens I was thinking about buying yesterday at the store. I went back there today and the girl said they now have the same lens in good shape used for almost half the price! The lens plus the camera came to the same price as the Coolpix. Everything just seemed to fall into place! I'm a bit nervous because the man at the first camera store insisted that I should only buy a new cnon camera with the lens it comes with and it would be stupid to do anything else. That is what I would have done if I had an extra $600 which I don't. Used is the only way I can do this so that's it. I am feeling really really good about the used camera and lens though! I'm so excited to learn how to use a camera!!! Thanks everyone for all of your feedback!!! If you have any encouraging words about buying used that would be welcome. Now I'm trying to find a camera bag that I like and can afford while drooling over Ketties and Epiphanies! I will be saving to buy another lens with zoom. Have a great day, Roni

I probably wouldn't buy a used camera from a stranger, but I would trust that Emily probably treated that thing like it was her child. How exciting for you!!! What lens did you get?

aw, Roni, that is very exciting. I think you are going to be super happy with your decision!

I'm totally trusting Emily here! I'm planning to get the lens from the camera store but it is used. It is a Canon 50mm f/1.8. It will cost $89. If I get it new they are asking $149.95. Please someone tell me you would buy a used lens from a camera store. I feel like I could get a good deal on a new one on Amazon but the lady at the store seemed like she will be much more willing to help me with questions about my camera and will work with me on the cost of printing my photos if I buy from them. I'm considering it building a relationship with them but I'm thinking when it is time to get a second lens I might go somewhere else. I'm just hoping the camera gets here in one piece and I'm not making a mistake buying a used lens. I haven't bought it yet so if you think I really should only buy a new lens please let me know. I'll be buying the lens tomorrow. I'm so nervous but excited! Please keep your fingers crossed for me! I'm going to post a question about camera bags in the photography thread but if anyone has a suggestion for a really cheap, feminine, camera bag that could also serve as a purse let me know. Again thank you soooo much ladies! Have a good night, Roni
