Definitely not. I'll keep clothes receipts until I wash them first time in case I need to return...but food, pet supplies, other misc, nope - not saving it. I have enough clutter in my life as it is! LOL!

they get saved until they are put into the correct Mint app category, since we're watching our pennies right now with the house remodel, we are tracking every penny we spend... but normally we don't save receipts for small items... just the big items that we might return or exchange LOL

She was concerned over a rabbit food receipt?!?!? She sounds like one of my 'nosey' neighbors that every time we get out of our car she must be parking her 'arse' in front of the window. When I see her sometimes she's like 'oh, I see y'all were at Walmart'. Ah yea, like its any business of hers. DH just laughs and says there's a crazy broad in every neighborhood! LOL

I save my receipts in that I throw receipts in my purse and once in awhile I clean my purse out LOL! :)

I save any receipt that has tax on it. :blush

In Washington, we have sales tax, but no state income tax. For the past several years, we've been able to deduct the sales tax off of our federal income tax. The IRS allows for a standard deduction, but we always have way more than the standard, so I save everything and add them all in. It reduces our taxes about $3000 extra at the end of the year. So yes, I am a tax dork.

But I totally think it is weird that a neighbor would find the receipt, do the detective work to figure out who the owner was and then tell them about it later. :giggle

I save them for things I might want to return. So clothing and other merchandise. I definitely don't keep any food receipts.

I save them until they clear my bank account to make sure they don't over charge me lol.

I wanna know how she found it...kinda creepy...

Ok, I'm a finance person by trade so I USED to save all our receipts.

But not since I bought a Fujitsu Scansnap. Now I scan all my receipts, input them into Quicken, then shred the ones I'll never need again. I only keep major purchases, healthcare related ones, tax related ones, and things I might want to return. For the things I might want to return, I put them in an envelope and check them about once a month and get rid of the ones that are old.

No...only for big purchases and if I can use it as a write off (work clothes mainly). Otherwise it gets trashed.

I'm glad somebody brought up the income tax angle on this (as I was going to mention it). I personally only save receipts for big purchases or things I might need to return.

BUT, the year I bought my house and a ton of STUFF to decorate it, keeping the receipts was good as I was able to use the actual sales tax deduction instead of the standard and saved about $400 in income tax. So keep in mind if you're going to have a heavy purchases year if you live in a state with no state income tax.

My tax fairy two cents...

that rabbit food was long ago converted to rabbit poop

that's pretty funny.

i only save receipts if it is something that i potential would return.... usually that means i don't save them! lol.

Yes, this. This has been a major benefit for us for quite a few years now. Although it does tell us that we buy a LOT, since we are so far over the standard deduction every year!

I guess I'm the freak here... I save every receipt. Why? I have no idea. I have gone back to look for a couple receipts for various reasons over the years, but mostly, they just take up space in my house. But just in case you want to know how much a gallon of milk was six years ago. I can tell you! :giggle

We don't intentionally save them for other than major purchases, but they do tend to accumulate quite a bit before we get around to sorting through and getting rid of them. We did the tax thing one year, and came out at almost exactly the standard deduction, so thankfully dh hasn't made me go through that again.

I would have found your neighbor's comment pretty strange too. I find odd receipts in our yard sometimes, especially after a windy trash pickup day, and I just toss them without a second thought. it never would have occurred to me that the owner might want them, even if I could figure out who they belonged to!

We save receipts too for big purchases or things that could be returned if broken, etc...
Sounds as if your neighbor has nothing better to do. :giggle

Euh weird. When I go out and stuff they always ask me if I want the receipt and I'll say no. My father keeps all his gas receipts and I'm like WTH, he claims it's make sure they charge him the right amount. "Did they?" I asked. Yep they did but sure enough they're still sitting there in his car...as far back as November of last year...oiye!
