Have you read the children's book The Seven Silly Eaters?

It's AWESOME and totally my kids...well at least my boys.

They are the pickest eaters ever and it drives me INSANE! :rollingpin Jessica will try pretty much anything, but the boys are just redic!

Are your kids picky and what do they eat? Do you have great go to recipes that they WILL eat?

xo

Hmmm, mine aren't picky so much as they don't like bad food, which is pretty much what I cook. {sigh} My husband also believes that children should be forced to eat everything on their plates, so dinner time is not fun time at my house.

My children will never turn down Mac & Cheese, hot dogs or pb&j. That totally doesn't count, though, does it?

My boys are soooooooooo picky! Stella will eat anything pretty much. My hubby too believes the kids should eat whatever is set before them, but it doesn't happen AT ALL. It seems like with the boys it's texture issues more than anything. They don't like mashed potatoes or anything that is mushy like that. They like noodles but only certain shapes and I don't know how or why that happened! I NEVER catered to them so it's just so random!

I try to keep things on hand that I know they will eat...hot dogs, lunch meat...Gabe likes carrots, ezra likes celery, they all like corn. Spaghetti is something we have at least once a week because they all like it. Oh and the boys looove plain lettuce but you can't put anything on it..no dressing or anything...seriously it's bizarro!

glad i'm not alone!

my favorite quote from justin (re: food) is: "i don't like my vegetables WET."... explaining why he won't eat vegetable soup!

justin LOVES salad w/ dressing but NOTHING else... thankfully he eats a ton of fruit and veg, but the only meat he'll touch are HOT DOGS! He says he's a vegetarian..... um.... i'm PRETTY sure Hot Dogs kick you right out of that club....

josh LOVES pasta (w/ butter/evoo ONLY), any bread products, "mom's famous homemade pizza" as he says, scrambled eggs, waffles/pancakes (aka more bread), chix nuggets, i can force him to eat grilled chix recently, likes fruit, but the only veg he'll eat are: brocc, baby carrots (NOT cooked), & mashed potatoes. He doesn't even like CEREAL! <---- isn't that anti-kid? Oh but he DOES like oatmeal..... figure that one out!

PITAS!

My daughter is a picky thing also..but she has gotten better in the past couple of years. She will eat just about anything off the grill which helps..for some reason she's convinced everything is great grilled. She likes all the typical kid foods though (mac and cheese, pb&j, spaghetti, etc.). She won't eat spicy though unless it's grilled. I made a very mild chili a couple of nights ago that she complained was too spicy...but she'll eat DH's grilled cajun pork tenderloin which has a serious bite to it...go figure.

Crystal, DD is like that too with salad greens..she'll eat the greens and cucumber (but no other salad veggies) and with no dressing. I wish I liked salad better with no dressing..lol.

Oh mines atrocious. She will only eat beige foods :P and refuses to eat anything wet. wont even touch a sandwich if it has jam in.
I spose I should be thankful, she used to only eat custard and cheese slices LOL
Peeves me off... im such a foodie and shes the total opposite.

I have no one to show off my amazing stroganoff to :|

Mine is right there in the picky eaters club too. It drives me crazy. Like Crystal said I never catered to him so I don't know how this all happened! Now I do pretty much cook what I know he will eat simply because I want him to eat. He will eat apples but not applesauce (at least not often enough for me to keep it on hand) and strawberries. Raw carrots (but not cooked), artichoke (really??? but it is totally true), and broccoli. Like Lauren said we also do the pasta (w/ butter/evoo ONLY--never red sauce of any kind---sometimes pesto). Grilled cheese, cheese quesadilla, cheese cubes. Crackers. Almonds. Eggo brand pancakes (if I buy a different brand he can tell & refuses to eat them...I even made homemade a few weekends ago & he had one bite). UGH. Drives me batty. He is also a self proclaimed vegetarian but loves bacon.

I had two that were pretty picky growing up. My oldest didn't like cheese unless it was on a cheeseburger or pizza. He didn't like a lot of veggies or fruit either. He didn't like anything that was mushy or slimy either...like mashed potatoes, jello, oatmeal, etc... Now, he's 28 and loves everything. Seriously...anything!!

My second son was just awful. Mealtimes were horrible. I tried to always put things on the table that we considered part of the meal, just so he'd have something to eat and I didn't feel that we were catering to him. Those were apple slices, bread with peanut butter on it, and carrot sticks. He would eat pasta like your son Lauren..just butter or olive oil. Unfortunately, he is still a horrible eater at 25. He is back home living with us, and I just try to keep food in the house that he can eat. He likes Teriyaki burgers, so we make those occasionally. He won't eat mayo or mustard, so if someone has made a sandwich and either of those have touched it, it's garbage to him. He eats NO veggies, but likes some fruits now. He also eats so much junk food...and he's so skinny and can't put weight on. Really? Why didn't I get those genes?

My other two thankfully have always been pretty good eaters. They have always eaten most everything. My youngest doesn't like cereals though, although he'll eat cream of wheat, and he doesn't like most cookies or any sweet breads at all. He wouldn't eat any cookies when he was young. Most people couldn't believe it!

I think having picky eaters was one of the hardest things about raising kids. Every day and every meal was such a struggle.

my daughters' allergies really limit her meal time choice and she still is picky! She can't eat corn, nuts or soy so pretty much all processed foods are out... Her grandmother made some baked beans for her and I actually found Bushes Baked Beans (only one variety) didn't have corn starch or soy in it so I bought some... she tells me tonight " beans aren't my favorite anymore... may I have fruity pebbles (can you believe it? no crap in fruity pebbles!) instead."

No crusts, no spicy, no white cheese, only veggies carrots and peas...cereal without milk... this from a child that can't eat much anyway... lol

My oldest has Celiac, so no gluten (wheat) products, but otherwise, she's a good eater.

My little one is kind of a freak. For example, while we are on vacation, she refused everything on the kids menu and ate sushi. She will rarely eat chicken fingers and the usual kid stuff, but give her a nice piece of salmon and she's happy. Never eats candy - loves fruit. Doesn't even like cake. LOL I wish I could take some credit for these eating habits, but it just seems to be the way she's wired.

The one thing I have done for a long time with my kids is what I call the "peanut butter pass". If they don't like what I've made for dinner, they get 1 pass a week in which I will make something else for them. I've found they are more willing to try things because they don't want to use their pass up too soon.

That's brilliant!

Laura that is an incredibly smart awesome idea....implementing it tomorrow.

my kids aren't super picky, although i think they would like to be. sebastian isn't a huge veggie eater, but he will eat them. he would prefer to eath pbj & hot dogs for every meal
isaac likes almost anything... the kid is a veggie LOVER! will ask for seconds, sometimes thirds on his veggies. weird. but i'm thankful. he does NOT like macaroni & cheese... what kid doesn't like macaroni? and he doesn't like peas, but since he eats so many other veggies we don't push the issue.
and meagan likes just about anything, but she does not like pizza. again, what kid doesn't eat pizza? strange.

laura we do something like the pass too, but it's at each meal. we put a certain amount (small portions) of everything we want them to eat. Then we tell them they have to take one bit of everything, but they are allowed to leave one thing on their plates. but you have to understand that we give VERY small portions to begin with. then when they've tried everything, if there's something they want more of, they can have seconds or whatever. but it works really well. it gives them a sense of being able to make decisions about what they eat, and still keeps boundaries in place where they know that they do need to try things even if they don't maybe like them so well.

I´m sooo happy to have no picky eater! Mattis eats everything, more than me, lol!

Ooh this has been a good thread! Bugga is SUCH a picky eater. As in, doesn't eat a single vegetable. Eeep. And pretty much only will eat bananas or some dried fruit. She will eat noodles, rice, tortillas, cereal, chicken and some pork, some lunchmeat, sometimes cheese, sometimes wheat bread. And that's pretty much the sum of it. We are currently working on a "new foods" and "healthy eats" sticker chart and the going is very very slow.
