Just thought I'd update here..
I did an Ancestry test in March. The results were supposed to come in the first week of May. They sent a message saying that there was a processing error and I needed to do the test all over again.
I submitted the second one in May and got the results last weekend.

As far as matches, the closest I had is a first cousin. I haven't contacted anyone and not sure I ever will. I was more curious about the ethnicity. I haven't had time to really dig in to it yet, but hopefully soon!

So you are mostly northern Europe and British Isles. I'm the same.

As far as the first cousin, may I suggest that you let them contact you if they are interested since you seem like you aren't necessarily looking for them. Not everyone is happy to find someone they didn't know about in their family tree.

Yep, that is exactly how I feel about it! If anyone contacts me, I'll take it from there, but I don't plan to initiate.
 
That's cool that you got your results and found a 1st cousin match. I'm glad you're comfortable with your decision to wait for them to initiate contact if they want to also. Do they get notified when there's a new match?

I was never notified of new matches but if I logged in to the area for the DNA results, matches do come up. So if that person does keep checking for matches, they might see it. I don't remember if I turned off notifications or not. I did mine 7 years ago and it could have changed since then.

Like @HavaDrPepper said, for me they just show up when I log in to the sight and it will say "new matches" or something like that. I'm not sure if there is some way to get notifications.
 
I wish this had been an option when my mom was still alive and healthy. She was adopted in the 40s, so she had no info on birth parents. She made some attempts to find info on the Internet but without success. She might have been able to discover more this way.
 
I get email notifications of new matches but when I log in, it's always like an 8th cousin or something so I don't find it particularly useful.

Same. I never check my matches anymore because of this.
