Lori, there are no rules with art journaling. There can be photos or not... a lot of times you see people do a lot of quotes or words snips or the likes of a ransom alpha, but it is a lot of blending and journaling your feelings thoughts etc... it can have stitching or elements if you want it really is an eclectic piece of art .. Your page is wonderful! I love it!!!
It is different then a traditional layout in the sense that traditional layouts explain the photo of what transpired.
Art Journaling is more emotional or quoting.. it is allowing you freedom to express your inner thoughts and feelings that you normally would not put on a normal digi layout. Art journaling is more of a "personal" journey just like you would write a "diary" or a personal journal... it is art expressing those inner feelings.
A regular layout explains the event of captures the memory of a particular occaision or like a family gathering, birth of child anything documenting and sometimes is done in the 3rd person, where art journaling other than quotes etc is 1st person.
Does that explain it better for you? Again there are no rules.. this is just "my" interpretation of what art journaling is.
Here is a site I just googled that gives an idea if you were to actually keep an art journal notebook but gives a little thought as to what I explained above to give you assistance in understanding in your own way. http://www.artistsjournals.com/instruction.htm
I like this quote from that page "Just remember that it's art if you say that it's art; no other standards apply."
