I'm using the trial version of CS5 right now, upgrading from CS3. I really liked how everything just opened in it's own window, all the time, is there a way to do this in CS5?

i have cs4
and i think i know what you're talking about. cs4 also confused the heck out of me
when every time i opened something it lined up across the top.
(is that what you're talking about?)
like cs3, i can't get each thing; paper, ellie, photo etc. to open in it's own
window....
but if you want to move something in cs4 (and i'm assuming it's the same in cs5)
click at the top of the window (of the particular ellie, paper, photo etc) and drag it do the side of your screen
or where ever you want to move it.
i have two monitors
and i move stuff all over and use this A LOT!

it does take awhile to get used to all the windows opening along the top
but i love it now.

I just recently upgraded from CS2 to CS5 and I know exactly what you're talking about... Try this:

Edit/Preferences/Interface and then click OFF Open Documents as Tabs... I hated the default with that on! I hope this helps! :)

Oh thank you Karen!!

Just as Karen said! I had the same problem when I had CS5 new! Glad I got it figured out - it was a royal pain at first!
