Wondering if one of you lovely ladies happens to be a needle crafter as well as a scrapper?
I am creating a baby afghan for my newest grandbaby due in April. This is my son & daughter-in-law's first child, so I wanted something special. I've got the body of the afghan done, but want to create a pretty lace edge like this one:

I'm wondering if anyone can help me recreate the pattern? I would start after the first row of double crochet (or hdc) stitches. Then there are shells (5 DC in one stitch?). Next row looks like a DC between the shells and a SC in the middle with a chain connecting them? Then another row of DC or HDC. Then it gets a little harder to interpret... chains connecting every third stitch? Followed by a shell or a SC (of maybe SL ST) in every other chain loop from previous row? Lastly, V stitches that make a larger shell?

The pattern comes from this book:

I hope someone call help me! Thank you!

I can crochet animals but am hopeless when trying flat patterns - go figure...
Check out Youtube videos, they might have some clue as to how to go about it - I am constantly looking things up there and am rarely let down.

I just know it is beautiful! I am a crocheter, and find pinterest has some good idea, to write it out to get the patter on paper first?

How to Read Crochet Pattern Symbols and Charts

@KairynLisa This chart may help but this diagram that Anne shared is not exactly the same as your photo.

To me where you say a row of shells... I feel it is first a row of about 3 or 4 chain loops. 3 or 4 chain - miss 2 stiches SC - 3/4 chain miss 2 stitches SC etc all the way around.
Next row... slip stitch to middle of loop - (2 DC one chain 2 DC in next loop - SC into next loop - 2DC one Chain 2DC in next loop -SC in next loop ) repeat all the way around.
Next Row... You will be working 5DC into each of the one chains between the 2DCs and SC into space formed between the SCs in previous row
Then I think it looks like a row of two chain loops in every stitch all the way around for final row.

Hope this helps.

Oh that is beautiful!! I wish I could help, but I'm not quite there yet. I can follow patterns easily enough, but I can't recreate them from a visual.
I will send the picture to my mum, she is extremely clever at figuring this sort of thing out.

Alternatively you could try your local library to see if they have the actual book, or there might be a crochet facebook group for your area (or extended area) and someone might have it you could borrow.

Thanks, ladies! I did check my library, no luck there. I will try drawing it out today since the weather is cold and rainy (freezing rain to be exact) I'll be tucked in all day with plenty of time.

Keep the ideas coming!

Thank you, @A-M i will mock your thoughts up!
@Chippi thank you too! Hoping your mom can help!

Oh yes, @Karen is right about Ravelry. It's really great, tons of patterns etc.

Wow!! Awesome!!
My mum did figure it out, but I had a crazy day and never got back to post it for you. So great that you managed it!!!
