I am thinking very seriously about online backup. I recently got the bad news that my main EHD has crashed and our computer guy can not recover the data. While most of my scrap goodies were backed up to a second EHD I still lost my pictures. The EHD that crashed was not that old so it has just led me to think that I need to find a different solution.

Do you use online backup? If so, which one? And do you like it?

Also, what type EHD do you use? How long have you had it? Any other thoughts you'd like to share about it?

Thanks so much in advance for any help you can give me.

I use CrashPlan and have had mixed results with it. I use it to back up both to an EHD and to their cloud storage. The EHD backup has always worked perfectly. My old computer couldn't handle the cloud service very well. I got a new computer in December and it works great with it.

The originals of all my photos and other important files are stored on the internal hard drive of my computer and are backed up both to EHD and the cloud. I've been thinking about adding another EHD as well.

The EHD I currently use is an older Iomega. I'm not sure how long I've had it. At least three years I think. It's one that requires external power (not just from the USB port) and it just sits on my desk. I don't move it at all, and I keep it on and connected all the time. It's done really well, especially for as old as it is and all the power outages and such it's been through, which is the main reason I'm thinking of getting another. I don't know how much longer I can really expect it to last, and I'd rather have an extra extra backup before this one goes.

I use crash plan and have good luck. I started backing up online as well after an EHD crash that could not be recovered. It was bare,y a year old. I have another that I don't leave plugged in and running all the time and it seems to have lasted. I rely on crash plan though for my backup.

I tried crashplan and it was okay but I went back to backblaze.
my end is west dig I have tried all of them they are all bad lol it is just to keep my hard drive less full. Usually for me they click before death, so a warning.
I do make DVD backups of photos for my mom she gets all my pics, I have backup off site and one happy grandma.
I print my pages and the companies keep my pages.

I'm super resistant to the online backup plans because I'm not sure they would ease my mind that my stuff was really backed up and that it wouldn't cost me too much to get it back if I needed to recover. So I can everything I own on an EHD. I mirror that to an internal HD in my desktop. Then I have a 3rd EHD that I keep at work and back up too as well. My plan is not foolproof however as this relies on me clicking the button on SyncToy to actually do the backup. I've been doing it about every 2-3 weeks. The worst that I would lose is my scrap stuff though since I never delete a picture of my camera chip or my phone until it's backed up to all three hard drives.

I actually set up an automatic task to run the back up at home, but I set it for the middle of the night and it won't run unless the computer is not in sleep mode. I need to fix that to run at about 9:00 pm or so since I know the computer is usually on and "awake" at that time.

Oh yeah, and I have all my full sized scrap pages at Shutterfly so I could always reprint those books if I needed too. It was cost a fortune, but I could do it. I wonder if my insurance would cover that in case of a fire? Funny that I wouldn't care much if my furniture burned, but I sure would if my scrapbooks did!

I use carbonite and two sep 1TB EHD's to backup my stuff. One is kept in a fireproof box here at home and one is kept off-site. DH and I have had the worst luck with EHD's crashing. Even ones that just sit and are never moved. We decided to add online backup as an extra precaution. It is just a habit at the end of each month to bring home the drive and run a new backup.

I use Crash Plan and a 2TB Western Digital EHD. It's an AC powered drive and I never move it except to dust it off once in a while. It's mounted under my desk on a shelf. I've had it for 4 years now and I've been thinking I should look into swapping it out with a new one.

I use Carbonite for online backup. I also have a desktop 2 TB Western Digital EHD and a portable 2 TB EHD as well. The desktop I keep plugged into an outlet and it sits on my desk. I use the portable EHD for scrapping on my laptop, which I really rarely do.

I have a Western Digital My Passport 1tb portable drive. No issues so far. I do not keep photos on it though. I do have all supplies on there. And then I have that and my photos backed up to Crashplan. I did have to use Crashplan to find something that I had deleted or incorrectly saved over and that took longer than I expected as I had to track down where it was and then re-download the item. But it did what I wanted it to do.

My Crashplan finished 3 days ago... finally! I also backup to an EHD, a Seagate as well. My computer is set up with a RAID type thing so that I shouldn't lose it all (at least my boss thought it was the best option when he ordered my computer). I use Flickr for all my rated photos at full res and my full res scrapbook layouts (but I don't do that except for a few times a year when I resize/upload and print them). I probably should make that a monthly task.

I'm a crashplan user... you may remember when my EHD died a few months ago and I posted here whining about it. LOL I ended up being able to recover all my files (mostly photos) at no extra cost from crashplan, so for me it was definitely money well spent. And I just like the peace of mind having an off-site back up gives me. I have been using Seagate drives the past few years. In general I'm happy with them, except for that one that died :(

I've just started using Crashplan too. I have a local backup to an internal drive in my PC and am about 10% into the online backup! I suspect it may take some time.... :giggle

I use Crashplan for cloud backup. The family bulk plan is great for my family of 7 (college kids so lots of computers).

Not one to put all my eggs in one basket, I use the NovaBackup Program to back my data up nightly to my Seagate 3T external hard drive. It runs every night. Every so often I switch out the external and put the latest copy off-site at my mom's house.

Thanks for all your feedback. i just ordered a seagate EHD and I am going to see how that goes. When I get everything transferred to it from my WD then I will have 2 backups again for my scrapping supplies. I am also going to start uploading a full resolution of my photos and finished scrap pages to my Flickr account. It never hit me until the other day when my friend, Melissa(mlewis), was telling me about how she uses that as her online backup for photos and such. It's only $25 a year and I can have all my photos and scrap pages right there for me if I need them. I have had my flickr account forever and I can't believe it never dawned on me to use it like that. While I would be devastated to lose all my scrap supplies, I would be even more heartbroken losing all the photos and memories. I will eventually get another EHD so that I can have it all backed up 3 places and I am still thinking seriously about crash plan. So many decisions.

I. Have been toying with the idea of upgrading my Flickr account too, I think it's a great way to go. I already upload my layouts there, I would just have to start putting my photos there too.
