*Closed & Winner Announced* GAME: The One Tradition I Always Scrap | DYD 2025

Tradition: We do Christmas with my side of the family the weekend before Christmas every year. We do Saturday with my Dad & Stepmom & Sunday with my Mom & Stepdad.

Why: We live about a 6 hour drive away, so it's just not possible to see everyone on Christmas. My inlaws live close to us, so we usually do something with them on Christmas Eve. But this way, we are always home for Christmas- or the years we did vacations for Christmas- Santa would come early, then we'd head to the airport. This was important to me especially when the kids were little & still believed in Santa! Doing it this way means we actually get to spend some real quality time with family we don't see as often. Of course all of these Western WA Christmas memories make it into my DYD albums too!

something I always scrap is family just being together, and there;s always a day when we gather together with kids' boyfriends and cats
I love having all the family under the same roof

The tradition: shopping for a new Christmas ornament with my daughters every year.

The why: We started when they were, hmm probably 6 and 8, can't remember, but we would go to the one local garden centre that goes all out with Christmas decorating with my mum, wander all the store then go back and the girls would choose a new ornament each. The idea was this would be their set for when they set up their own home. We would always finish with a trip to the cafe there. Both the ornaments and cafe are over-priced really, but it makes it an extra special day.

My mum has since died but we've continued and both the girls still look forward to it. One lives at home and I'm not sure she will ever live independently. The other moved into her own home a couple of years ago. She didn't choose to take all of her own chosen ornaments (she decorates to the red/green/gold theme), so the pink girly ornaments from previous years were left with me. I never used to decorate to a colour scheme but in my new house I use pastel colours so she had some of our family ornaments and I kept her rejected ones! I have them on my own tree and we reminisce over them still.

The girls are now 26 and 24. I imagine it's a tradition we will carry forward if grandchildren come along.

Also thanks for the reminder, I need to 'book in' a date with eldest daughter so she allows time in her social calendar for us!

I haven't got many photos (shamefully).
This is so sweet. No shame in no photos! It means you're enjoying the time together!

There are a few I usually document every year... the Christmas morning mess after presents have been opened and we are just hanging out enjoying the day together. Our town has a Christmas Village with lights and fun decorations downtown so we go every year and I always take lots of photos for that as well.
I love the pictures I have of the Christmas morning mess! Sadly I forget most years but I do have a few!

That's so nice you have a set schedule. I never know when my family is going to get together.
