So yesterday we spent all day cleaning out the basement! Today I'm taking an entire mini-van of stuff to the dump. And on Tuesday I have a load going to recycling. Among the stuff we are throwing out is a garbage bag full of music tapes (cassettes) and an original Mac Laptop. Like first of the line laptop. Why oh why didn't we do this sooner?

What is in your house that you should have thrown out years ago? What needs to go?

i'm not a keeper or collector and we've moved so often, we don't have a lot of excess. my mom always gets mad at me saying i don't keep "anything!" lol. i did go through all the kids' old artwork and took pics of it (thanks kaye) so i could dump all that - now need to get them into some format to print into books.

I am with you Amy! We also move every 2-5 years, so we don't keep things long! :)

It's interesting to me that over the years we had purged several times. And each time we would think, hmmmmm should we get rid of the Mac and my DH would say well noooo. And yet this time he could finally let go. That happens to me alot (more than him) that there seems to be a magic amount of time before I can get rid of some stuff.

Moving will do it too. I totally laugh (or insert shudder) when I see those commercials that suggest if your house is full of stuff, you should rent a storage place.

We got rid of a ton of stuff with this last move, and I still can find stuff that needs to go. I am bad about keeping things just in case I might need them some time in the future. I am trying to get better about that though. And I don't want to even think about what all we have in storage now back in the states.

Ugh... every once in a while I will go on a big purging of our house... unfortunately it's never enough...

We have a big purge once a year and have a charity come pick up a bunch of stuff. I feel like clutter bogs me down - I can't stand it!

I've been slowly decluttering the house for a while now but I got bogged down in the computer room. Scrap stuff, kids art and paper work. ugh
I don't want to store my paper scrap stuff, but I can't get rid of it either...what if I want to do hybrid one day? Yes I need to scan or photo the kids stuff but there is just so much. And paper work is just a nightmare. DS tipped out my 2 expanding files and it is just too big a mess to think about! So that's where I'm at! I did take some old scrap and craft stuff to the school the other day so that was good. Even a $23 pack of stamps that I never opened! ugh what was I thinking??

due to this last move i have a 2-car garage full (and i do mean full) of boxes that I need to go through and purge. i'm just waiting for it to cool down here a bit. kind of hard to clean it out when the heat index is around 110 and stifling in the garage.

That is exactly what our study looked like Eryn. It was a big mess. I gave up a long time ago on the kids paper work. Most of it goes right away now. You can just imagine with 4 kids in school. The paperwork is crazy. But I still had filing everywhere and paper scrapping stuff everywhere. I have a terrible habit of doing something and then not putting stuff away. And I still need more storage for some of it, like my mini-albums.

But what I'm saying is that if I can do it, you can too Eryn!!

And good luck Leslie. Uggh that does not sound fun. I can see why you would want to wait for it to be cooler. Best of luck sweetie!!

Sounds like LOTS of us are in the same boat... just moved... did all my necessary purging then! It feels nice to have left it behind instead of lugging it around and storing it unnecessarily! I do still need to go through and perge clothes that the kids have outgrown over the past 6 months. Seems they are growing like weeds all of a sudden, and their clothes don't fit them for very long.

I literally got rid of like everything when we moved last month.. ^_^ I had NO interest in packing a lot of things so they went bibis :p haha I've been an apartment dweller for the past 10yrs though- and tiny ones at that.. there's just never been room. Kid had collected a MASS amount of stuff though @ this last apartment- so it had to be done :p

I'm the anti-hoarder, so there's not a lot I should toss. I could potentially weed out my purses and some shoes, but other than that I can't think of anything

I firmly believe everyone should pretend that they're moving every 5 years, and go through their house deciding what to pack and what to toss!

Oh man...you guys wouldn't believe the amount of crap-o-la we have in our house. My husband and I are both pack rats. I wouldn't say horders, but it's close. Plus, for years, we were the only kids of our siblings...so, our parents would just give us everything. We both had a hard time saying no or just getting rid of it. So...for years, little by little we are getting rid of stuff. Seriously makes me sick the amount of stuff we have held onto. I'm currently working on our basement as I have/make time to do it.

BTW, I also have paper scrapping supplies...still. 5 years now and I still haven't gotten rid of it all. I need to do a couple lots on eBay or something. Stamps...Quickuts...ugh...

Oh me too Keela... I have sooooo much stuff in this house. Our last house didn't have much storage space so I couldn't keep much, but our current house and TONS of storage space in the basement, so store stuff we do! Yikes. Mostly it's my craft stuff and books and decorations for the house and camping stuff... but man do we have a lot of junk!

I did finally get rid of my paper scrapping stuff and some of my stamp sets that were just collecting dust. Thankfully I do a garage sale every spring and I'm always amazed at the amount of stuff we get rid of that way.

ugg, I'm the worst pack-rat, there's been many of fights in this house about when DH wants to throw something away and I can't just let it go. It's really something I need to work on.

Oh my goodness. We've been in the same house for 15 years. SO. MUCH. STUFF. I dread the day we ever have to move. There is a lot I wouldn't hesitate to part with, but dh is our big "collector", and just the thought of the process of going through everything terrifies me.:scared
