So with Michelle needlessly worrying about meeting celebrities (because she's a rockstar designer), I was sighing to myself thinking I'm glad I don't have to worry about that... because I was a total dork when I met two of my favorite poets (okay, so they aren't *really* celebrities in the most-commonly-used-meaning of the word).

I met Sharon Olds at a dinner reception the day before she was reading at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. I was totally dry-mouthed and couldn't think of an intelligent thing to say. DH looked at me like he couldn't figure out who I was (because I was speechless). She took pity on me and was really sweet.

The other time, I snuck out of work early to go to a Billy Collins reading at the local library. I was so worried about being caught, I just kept my head down and was trying to appear invisible. This guy was sitting in front of me, and he turned around and said, "Hi!" to me. I kind of mumbled back a hello, but was still trying to hide myself so he turned back around and probably thought I was totally rude. A few minutes later, I realized that it was Billy Collins. :duh I could have totally been chatting up the former US Poet Laureate. Sheesh.

Today, in my email, there was a newsletter from the Seattle Arts and Lectures series. Michael and Matthew Dickman, twin poets, are going to be in Seattle. So I get to go to see them read AND there is a pre-event "mingling" so I also get to meet them. O.M.G. I LOVE Matthew. :heartslub I referenced his work in my MFA thesis. So now I'm all flustered and trying to figure out what to wear and what to say. And I'm hoping they'll have nametags so I know which is which.

Okay. So I'm a poetry geek. But I'm totally excited and hoping that Michelle's good celebrity experience will rub off on me. LOL.

What celebrities have you guys encountered?

My mom grew up with Tess Harper and I met her once when I was in college and I've talked to her on Facebook. She was the first Oscar nominated celeb that I met but it was like meeting someone I've known forever cuz I'd heard so many stories bout her.

My degree was in theatre so I've worked with a few celebs. Michael Gross and Louis Zorich were my favorites. Michael Gross was so laid back and nice he spent an hour or so just chatting with me and one of the guys I worked with. The biggest star I've probably ever met was Olympia Dukakis..but that was just a brief meeting while I was working with Louis.

I've also worked with some Tony award winning lighting designers but that's theatre celebrity and most people wouldn't know there names...but I totally geeked out..lol. I even learned how to focus a stage light from one of them...I was never a lighting person and was hired to run a spotlight and they needed a quick refocus on a light that was near me...so he had to walk me through it. Later when I was actually doing more lighting stuff and had to focus lights (terribly I'm sure) I always wanted someone to ask me who I learned to focus lights from so I could say Richard Nelson...but alas it never happened.

Sinead O'Connor bought my husband lunch because he told her where the bathroom was in the mall he was at. This was before I met him though. He also met Pamela Anderson because he was in the hospital with her sister after getting his tonsils out. It was pre Baywatch but she was semi famous in Canada at the point for a beer ad campaign that she did. He told me that he didn't even know her as Pamela Anderson and told all his friends that he met The Blue Girl.

DH's celeb stories are much more random than mine...so I guess to me that makes them seem more interesting.

Hmmm... I met Plus One (a defunct Christian boyband) twice back in college. Yes, I said college, and it may or may not have been while I was in line getting their autographs for my and my roommates' posters which we may or may not have hung up on our walls until we graduated. I got to meet Sugarland before a concert, and it was because a scrap friend of mine is BFFs with the guy's (Kristian's) wife. How random is that?! They were supernice. There are prolly a couple more meet 'n' greets like that for me.

My dad has met tons and tons of celebrities over the years since he works at a college athletic/convention hall: President Bush I and II, Tom Brokaw, U2, KISS, Trace Adkins, etc etc. He is never impressed by or with any of them. :giggle

When I was in college, I used to attend lots of guest lectures, so I got autographs from Anna Quindlen and Betty Friedan. One of the coolest autographs - at least I think - that I've gotten was from Pete Best, who was the original drummer in the Beatles. I have seen lots of celebs just walking around in New York City: Tracy Morgan, Jack McBrayer, Molly Ringwald, Dianne Wiest, Rosie O'Donnell.

My mom has worked in car BWM and Cadillac dealerships forever and she's met lots of celebs and athletes over the years. She cracks me up when she casually mentions that someone was in the dealership - like Lil' Kim. LOL!!!

I've met a few.....Bill Clinton (he's from our state and was governor before being elected President), the husband and wife from L.A. Law, and I partied in Sicily with the Commodores!

DH & I are going to a conference in Chicago this week and one of the members is the bad cop from Terminator 2 and has been in other movies, as well. Haven't got to meet him but will most likely this week.

So cool.

I forgot I also did meet Dave Eggers (writer) at two different signings. That was back before he was quite as popular as he is now. He was a total sweetheart.

I have a friend who works in Philly, lives in Delaware and she spends a lot of time in Maryland and DC. She's always seeing celebrities and sending me weird cell phone pics of people she runs across.

We live a very sheltered life over here in Puyallup. LOL.

I can be a total snot here... I went to a private school in Los Angeles with many celebrities and children of celebrities. Honestly you don't need to be worked up about people. To be totally crass - they still blow their noses and wipe their butts. If they think they are better than everyone else, then they probably should be ignored and reminded of that:)
That being said - I do totally get being in awe of someone's talent!! I think talent is far more interesting than celebrity - so I am far more wowed by people like Sara and CD...and your favorite poet, than people like Paris Hilton.

I'm sure you'll do fine! Have fun!!

I met the Indigo Girls a few times and got to talk with them. They are my very favorite music group so I was super excited! My second cousin used to be a Radio City Music Hall Rockette but since she is my cousin it wasn't like meeting a celebrity. I also went to a book signing by Fannie Flag. I just said hi and she signed my book though. Fun question!

I totally didn't think about this in my first post but I set up two author talks for the library I worked for at the time and I got to spend a bit of time with both Chris Crutcher and Alex Flinn...Two favorite YA authors of mine and both incredibly nice people.

I met Reba before her concert at the Gorge...wasn't planned at all...my friend entered to win when we got there and won. I remember feeling all gross and sticky and hot and she was so sweet and waaayyy shorter than I thought she would be.

Then let's see...when we were flying out of Sea Tac on our way to Australia, while going thru security I noticed this lady getting searched...this wasn't long after 9-11 so they were still doing the full pat downs...she looked so familiar and it was killing me. Then I heard her speak...it was JoMarie Payton. She was the Mom on Family Matter and the voice of Suga Mama on The Proud Family. She was really sweet too and signed autographs for us.

I have also met Ty Pennington at a book signing up in Seattle. And the once while in Sacramento the Lakers were in town playing the Kings and staying in the same hotel as us. Kobe was really nice, didn't seem to mind the mob, signed autographs and took pictures. Shaq was a total d-bag though.

That is true! I can only imagine what you had to deal with in school. Ugh.

I can definitely say that I would have no desire to meet Paris Hilton. LOL.

I was so excited last month to get to meet Michael DeMeng, Jesse Reno and Andrea Matus... three amazing artists that were all completely down-to-earth and wonderful.

i went to highschool with kids who got drafted to the nhl.. does that count? ^__^ i don't think i've actually ever met a celebrity that i was overly interested in meeting. I've met various musicians and well hockey players.. but nothing is really sticking out in my mind... oh i remember meeting lisa loeb at a tiny little venue.. she was totally sweet and normal.. apparently my memory is shot ahah

The most famous celebrity I've ever met was the real Lassie-back around 1972. My mom worked in the PR department at Children's Hospital in Boston, and Lassie and his trainer Rudd Weatherwax were there to go visit the kids in long-term treatment wards. I was seven, and it was the COOLEST thing to meet one of the Lassies (this was Lassie #17). I loved the old Lassie and Timmy shows.

I'm not impressed with any celebrities. My sis works for many and calls me when she's having dinner with Big & Rich and whoever. She is friends with so many different ones...it's crazy. They're just people to me. She also works for Nascar and knows all the drivers and families. She can't get me to go with her if she paid me! She can't even get my boys to go!

Definitely would be more excited to meet Sara and CD!! They're definitely celebs in my book too!!

Let's see...I have had dinner with Jacque Larsen, Amber Clegg, AND Emily Merrit. They ARE as nice in real life! Some celebrities are just like that...

I am going to be meeting the famous Sara this summer too and I confess I am a little nervous. How does one act around such amazingness?!!!!! She's going to be totally disappointed with me haha!

Oh whatever! You have been her partner in crime for how many NSDs? :p I'd be totally nervous too though. hee hee.

I was excited to meet Matthew Dickman Tuesday night. He was super super sweet and kind and made sure we knew we were invited to go to drinks with them after the show. (DH didn't want to go, so I had to be disappointed on that front). I am also the biggest loser because I didn't get one.single.picture. How lame is that? On the way home, I was whining to DH about how I was going to have to hang my head in shame as a scrapper. He rolled his eyes. :giggle.
