Can we revisit an old topic?

I organize my stuff in acdsee photo manager and honestly I keep it simple... I tag kits by color & theme

themes like:
day out... followed by: zoo, petting zoo, beach, forrest...
also kids (boy & girl), holidays,
then 'home' followed by: sick, reading, sleeping, hobby, music and soooo on...

then I tag all the alphas from a kit and the single ones. If there are pretty flowers
or other ellies I tag those...but NOT every single item.

I also have a seperate P365 folder... where I have sections like: kits I used for P365,
journal cards, dates, papers (I love, mostly patterns), ribbons & tapes.

I just don;t tag every single item, I would go nuts after collecting stuff for over 6/7 years! haha

good to know about the collections! thanks for that tip!

yeah I lost, well not really lost, but cannot access my first 5 years of collection. i only have what I've accumulated the last 2/3 years.... and even then I think I bought MAYBE 3 things every other month. so right now my collection is manageable... I better do it NOW before I buy too much I can't catch up! I also only buy from maybe 2 or 3 stores. Its so hard to keep up with everyone and I like doing challenges with perks because as a mother of 3 the discounts help me get more than what i would get if i didn't participate. Plus my loyalties run deep! lol.

So I discovered (which many of you probably already knew) that Windows will allow you to tag jpg's, and then will sort them automatically into tag folders. So, if I tag something as "alpha; red; Christmas" it will show up in all 3 tag folders... and I don't have to duplicate/triplicate the image file to include it in various folders myself. I think this is what I'm going to do!! i'm excited to finally have a plan that I think I can reasonably catch up on, even given my monster-sized stash!!

I have about 3 TB of mostly zipped kits so I try to maximize use of my space.

Here's my process.

Folders:
Kits/theme or designer
General - are alpha, brushes, masks, qp, elements, etc

Kits: I generally keep kits togerther, as I use them that way. I sort into the theme for which I would most likely use the kit: baby, Christmas, fall, summer, Easter, teen, etc. If the kit doesn't work in one of these folders, then by designer (if they have a unique style or are one of my "go to" designers), and lastly a general kit folder. In each folder is a preview of each kit which references the name of the zipped folder(s). Within these folders I used to create a folder for each kit. I quit doing that for two reasons: it takes too much time and I have a visual memory so looking at a folder full of all the group's previews makes it easier for me to "shop" for what I am looking for.

Then there is a general folder for the single or groups of items (not kits) that I download AND also a reference of "favorite" items from kits that I may use with other kits. I keep as much zipped a possible, but sometimes the actual item and TOU together are smaller than the preview and zip, so I keep only the TOU and item. For items from kits that I want to quick reference - I ensure the item or image fo item(s) references the kit in the name.

For example: alpha - alphas that don't go with a kit are stored as a sheet or a preview and zip, if from another kit either a preview or a sample of a letter in the kit.

tips:
- when downloading I right click and save the preview, which then is saved in the same folder as my downloads
- I then sort the download folder by "date accessed", which allows me to see the preview and zip(s) are near each other making it easier to ensure they are linked to each other by the name and then can easily be moved to the same storage folder. (for zips downloaded from sites that don't allow the "right click", I just pull the preview from the zip and follow the same process.

Hope that gives you some ideas that you can use :)
best of luck

I have everything organized by stre and designer, but when I download a new kit or template, I also copy it into a "new" folder. After I scrap with it, I delete it from that "new" folder.

I used to tag stuff in ACDSee. Then I did it like Peppermint and tagged only the previews in Lightroom.

Now I just don't bother with any of it at all. Why? I don't re-use my digi stuff. The only pages I seem to scrap nowadays are for the very few CTs I'm on. And I almost never re-use anything, since I can't even keep up with the new releases. So I just don't bother tagging anything anymore.

Best system ever! :thumbsups

ha!! christine, i can kinda relate to that! although i do think sometimes i would reuse if i knew i could find the stuff... like stitching or journal cards that i've just forgotten about.

I have a folder system and that worked great when I was a kit scrapper, but ever since coming here, I've become a multi-kit scrapper and now my system is a HAWT MESS... my goal is to tag previews in Lightroom... there's no way I would tag everything, but definitely the previews... also I've found that I have good look with just using the windows search box... the problem is that not everyone labels their elements with what they actually are, so I might miss something I'm looking for, but doing a search for a certain color doesn't work so well LOL... I just know I need to work on this mess of mine!!!

OHHHHHHHH... I did not know that... Totally gonna try this!!!

Ooooo, this is such a good idea! Totally going to implement the new folder thing. I've always had a new folder but never thought to put it were it belongs as well. Thanks for the inspiration Melissa!

Seriously thinking about taking you up on that system Christine!!!
