Okay, so I told my hubby I want a Kindle for my b-day which is coming up. I've been an avid reader most of my life, but after the boys came along, it was hard to find the time. Now that they're sleeping through the night, I've re-discovered my passion! I'm reading the fever series now, but after I'm finished with that, I have NO idea where to start. That's where you come in! :) Give me your MUST READ, CAN'T PUT IT DOWN, THE BEST BOOKS I'VE EVER READ list...please. :)

Sophie's Choice by William Styron (my favorite author of all time!)
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man OR Ulysses by James Joyce
One Hundred Years of Solitude OR Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Crime & Punishment OR The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner
The Book of Psalms
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Millennium Series by Steig Larrsen
Ayn Rand - hard to pick one
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenger (sp?)
The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon
A Widow for One Year by John Irving (really anything from him)
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
Gramercy Park by Paula Cohen
The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman

OK I could go on forever...

LOL! Thanks, Laura! I've read a few of those, and really enjoyed them. Of course, Gone With the Wind is (in my humble opinion), the greatest classic ever! :) I'll definitely add some of those to my Kindle wish list! ;)

ooh, Laura, some good books--love the variety!

Some enjoyable books that I have read lately (also a mix!)

The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls
One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp
The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Ok...lots that have been mentioned here.

I love so many you mentioned Laura...and many are on my all time fave list as well.

My number one fave is "Here Be Dragons" by Sharon Kay Penman

I've read it several times and could read it again. I can't do that with too many books.

i´m sooooooooooooooooooooo sad... last night i finished re-reading my loved Harry potter´s
i miss soooooooo much Ron, Hermione, Harry, Dumbledore,Hagrid...:cry :cry :cry:cry

DH just reread #7. I'm currently reading the series aloud to my 10yo..we're on book three and she's loving it as much as DH and I did.

I love anything by Madelaine L'Engle (but especially the Austin series...starts out young and keeps going until Vicky is an adult).
I totally loved the Bridget Jones's Diary books, and written for a younger crowd but just as laugh out loud funny the Georgia Nicholson books (Louise Rennison - first book is Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging..hilarious!)
I'm currently reading 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson and am enjoying it so far (about halfway through it).

I have lots of YA favorites since my last job was in a library working with children and teens. I still don't read many books geared toward adults..lol.

DH just came in and asked what I was doing..lol he told me I needed to add A Prayer for Owen Meany to the list and then gave me a glare because he knows I haven't read it yet.

Some of my all-time favorites:

The Book Thief
Water for Elephants
My Sister's Keeper
The Help
the Thorn Birds
The Pilot's Wife
The Lovely Bones
Cutting for Stone
the Lotus Eater
I am the Messenger
The Scent of Rain and Lightening
The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
I Know This Much is True
Under the Dome
Nineteen Minutes
Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
The Hour I First Believed
Labor Day

Lots of my faves have been mentioned already, but I did want to add a few...

Twilight Series
The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory
Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare
Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead

Also, you might want to join Goodreads. It is a great way to learn about new books to read, and keep up with the ones you have read. And several of us at the pad are on there.

Oh.. this is such a great thread. I see lots of my favorites above, but wanted to add a few more:

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
Pope Joan by Donna Wolfolk Cross
Durable Good by Elizabethe Berg (love all her books)
These Is My Words by Nancy E. Turner
The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel (this is a series of FAT books) I loved 1-4 best.
Ender's Games by Orson Scott Card
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory

Now I have to go add a bunch of new ones to my Goodread "to-read" list. :)
