Best smartphone for sturdiness?

I'm thinking of getting my son a smartphone for his 18th birthday in July.My older two boys have the iPhone 3 and 4 and they have held up extremely well to the abuse boys can dish out. My husband, daughter and I have the Samsung Galaxy 3 and love them, but I don't know if my son would want the bigger Galaxy. I'm not familiar with other android phones.

Any opinions as to which phones hold up well to drops and roughhousing?

My son (12) has the Galaxy S3 in an Otterbox case and it's virtually indestructible.
 
I think the case is more important than the phone. I have a young child with a penchant for destruction of electronics, and a good case is everything! The ones we get are more geared to young kids than something an 18-year-old would want, but I've heard amazing things about Otter Box too.
 
I think it really depends on the case. There are TONS of great, nearly indestructible cases for all phones, and on the other hand, they are all pretty fragile without a good case, LOL. I have a LifeProof case for my iPhone and it's even waterproof (although I haven't tested it, hehe). I like it b/c it's not as bulky as the really sturdy Otterboxes.
 
I agree with getting a good case... You can get either Otterbox or Lifeproof for iPhone. Personally I find the Otterbox bulkier so I have the Lifeproof. You can get an Otterbox for Samsung but there is also a case called Obex for Samsung that is the same as an Otterbox.
 
I wouldn't recommend testing the Lifeproof one in water. My son DID have it for over a year and it accidentally got wet at a pool party. It slept in the rice bucket for a week. No camera (he had it replaced), texting works, phone works but it won't turn on and off. He still has it and is using it, though.
 
mmm I wouldn't know, but my daughter has the latest iPhone 5...and loves it...
what they say about the casing is true...super important....
 
Probably doesn't matter so much phone wise - get a GOOD case!!! Well worth their money in gold!!! I have the lifeproof case for my iphone 5, and while it does "bulk" the phone up a bit - it is WELL worth it!!! Makes the phone INDESTRUCTIBLE!
 
Another vote for Otterbox (I use one for my phone AND my iPad . . . had two separate occasions where if it weren't for the Otterbox I'd be without a phone and an iPad).
 
We all have an iPhone 5 here. Hubby, myself and our oldest DS.....I have an Otterbox on my phone and our son has a Lifeproof case....both are awesome cases!! I think the case is more important!! Definitely get a good solid case!!!!

We also have Otterbox cases on our 4 iPads....I love Otterbox!!
 
Well, I'm 17 and I love my iPhone 5... I think you should give him one. Here in Brazil all the teenagers want an iPhone. :) And, of course, you need to give him a resistent case because I few months ago I let my iPhone "dive"(or sink) in the toilet. lol
