Backblaze? Crashplan? What's your online backup choice?

Any opinions? I had been backing up from my internal drive, just to an external drive, and now that my external drive has pooped out, and I'm screwed, I'm going to be better prepared for next time. Recommendations anyone?

Thanks!!!

I just started using backblaze so I'm not too helpful, but I have to say I no longer have dreams of all my stuff disappearing into a void.

Crashplan. I highly recommend it - I've even had to recover files and it was easy. So worth the little extra expense!

I haven't have to use backblaze yet....but I tell ya it makes my heart happy...and no worries.

I've used CrashPlan for about a year now and it's already come in handy with a hard drive crash. I can recommend it.

I used Mozy until it got too expensive. I recently switched to Carbonite and I like it so far, but thankfully, I haven't had to test out the back up yet.

I love CrashPlan. But I've never tried BackBlaze, so I don't want to disparage them or anything. CrashPlan's software sets up really easy to do a cloud backup and a local backup, so that's why I dig it. I've had to use the local backup a few times (user error, I get delete happy!) but I've never had to dig into that cloud backup.

I've been using Backblaze for a couple of years and have been happy (same - quick install and off it goes). I've never (*knock on wood*) had to restore though...

I'm late to the party, but I'll just say I've been REALLY happy with Backblaze. Their customer service is excellent, and I'm in the process of restoring right now. They had everything backed up except from the 2 days before my computer died. It's super easy to restore files. I highly recommend them.

I have CrashPlan, but as Kellie mentioned, customer service is SO important. Carbonite's customer service is basically non-existant which is why I left them for CrashPlan. I have NOTHING good to say about Carbonite!

Crashplan has a family plan too where you can put up to 10 computers to backup. Comes in handy with 7 in our family. :)

Thanks again everyone! So, I went with Crashplan. I started backing up - and it's going to take 19 days to back up everything. Is that they way you guys backed up? Did you use your computers normally while you were backing up? Or did you do seed backups, sending bits at a time. Or, did you have them send you a harddrive, and send it back to them?

Thanks!

I have a TimeMachine for my Mac, but I also use carbonite. I am so paranoid that I'm thinking of getting a 2nd service!

I used my computer normally and let Crashplan take its time backing up. I also backup to an EHD thru Novastor. I rotate my EHDs and store one off-site at my Mom's. Yes,I am paranoid.

I used my computer normally while it backed up. At first, I set it up to only back up my iPhoto library because that's the most important thing. Once that was done, I changed the settings to back up everything. Backing up locally as well isn't paranoid, IMO, but really smart! Then you basically have an immediate recovery if it's just a simple drive failure. When my hard drive died, I just started booting off my EHD. A lot slower than using an internal drive, and not a good permanent plan, but it means getting things done even before you can get the drive replaced! :D

Wendy, if I remember right you can set it to work faster during certain hours. Like I set it to work hard on the hours of midnight to 7 am or something like that when I'm not usually using my computer. Then during daytime hours it would still be backing up but wouldn't interfere with what I was doing. I think it took about a month to finish.
