I know we have a few Lilypadders from The Netherlands and I was hoping you could help my son with his homework!! His topic this term is The World Cup and each child has been asked to find out more about one of the countries taking part in the World Cup this year, Matthew has been given The Netherlands to research!

This first week they are focusing on breakfast routines, if you have the time to answer these questions for him that would be a HUGE help, thank you!! He is very excited that I have online friends from The Netherlands who can help him out :)

Breakfast Routines

  • What do you eat?
  • Where do you sit?
  • What time do you eat?
  • Do you eat as a family?
  • Any other breakfast related information you would like to share!

Many thanks in advance!

Oh this is so fun. Obviously can't help as I'm from the US. But, can't wait to see the answers.

Well... I'm waiting to see these answers too! What a cool project!

It is a cool project, yes! I think they are going to compare and contrast the answers from all the different countries.

I'm not from there, but my stepfather is, so I've got some experience with breakfast in the Netherlands. I seem to remember a lot of cold cuts and cheese, much like other Western European nations. There's cold cuts, cheese, bread, and yogurt for breakfast. But this is something that startles most Americans: HAGELSLAG. Yeah, it's basically what it looks like: chocolate sprinkles like you'd put on a donut or and ice cream sundae, but instead sprinkled over toast. I know, I know. In the words of Goldmember, "Isn't zaat veerd?"

It reminds me of Nutella here in the US which is a chocolate hazelnut spread.

Thanks so much for the feedback!! My son now wants hagelslag for breakfast! :giggle

I'm from The Netherlands so I definitely can help your son.
We eat a lot of bread, so also at breakfast we eat bread. You can buy so many different sorts of bread, white, whole wheat, with lots of different kind of seeds, with a crusty crust (it's called tigerbread)

Dutch bakery:

Then on the bread you can put everything you like.
Cheese (young, aged or very old),cheese-spread, ham, salami, sausage-spread, peanut butter, jam and of course hagelslag. The also come in fruit taste like this:

At our home the kids always first need a piece of bread with good and then the can have one with sweet.
My daughter also likes yoghurt with muesli for breakfast and sometimes "beschuit":

We always eat breakfast at our dinning table, most families here have one place where they eat breakfast/lunch and dinner.
When the kids go to school the eat at the table and we make lunch (also bread) for them to take with them. Breakfast is then around 7:30, we have to leave home at 8:00 and school starts at 8:15.
In the weekend we eat sundays together breakfast and then we have fresh orange juice and an egg (boiled or baked) but not very early but that is because I'm a night owl. So saturday the kids eat alone so we can sleep a little longer.

Here some extra information about "beschuit"
When a baby is born we eat "beschuit met muisjes" in pink or blue:

muisjes (translation is mice) are made of aniseed and sugar, because aniseed have little tails with the sugar around it they look like little mice.
Then we also have smashed mice which my children also like on their bread for breakfast.

Hope I have some more information now.

Oh Karin, that's absolutely perfect, thank you SO much! Your timing is perfect too, Matthew's homework has to be in this morning! Thanks again!

My daughter is dating a foreign exchange student from Holland/The Netherlands. The spinkles on toast thing just kills her.

Where do you sit?
In front of the tv when i am home alone
at the dinner table if the familly is home

Another typical Dutch product eaten for breakfast is ‘ontbijtkoek’. Ontbijtkoek (breakfast cake) is a kind of spicy cake, light brown and spiced with cinnamon, ginger and cloves. It tastes sweet and spicy and you eat it with a thick layer of butter on top. You just buy the cake in the supermarket – ontbijtkoek is also available with raisins, nuts or sugar in it. Nowadays ontbijtkoek is also eaten as a snack: it is low in calories and is therefore seen as a healthy snack

Mabey i am to late but i am a dutchie for sure

Ok I can do this :D

What do you eat? We either eat 'brinta', it's kind of like oatmeal or we eat bread... And us dutchies love 'pindakaas' (peanut butter) and our girl loves chocolate of those fruity sprinkles ('hagelslag')

Ever since Senna was born, 6 weeks ago, we always have 'beschuit met muisjes' (like Karin said) and Lina loves to also have these for breakfast and whenever we get company who get to check out our baby girl :D

Where do you sit? If we all have breakfast together we eat at the dining table and if it's just me & Lina, when DH goes to work, we eat in front of the tv

What time do you eat? Since I'm still on maternity leave, it depends on what time the girls wake up...We always stay in bed a little longer, Lina watches some tv or we cuddle. Our nights are sometimes a bit short with Senna being so little, so I get to sleep another 30 mins :D Then we head downstairs, which is about 8 or 9AM

Do you eat as a family? Well it's kind of diff now that we have Senna...sometimes me or DH gets to sleep in a little longer, so Lina has breakfast earlier...BUT we do eat something when all of us are up, together :D

Curious to see what they'll be asking next week! Or will he have another country signed up to next week?
