Anyone's kid(s) been referred to an ENT for ear infections?

Anyone end up not getting tubes?

We've been going throughs rounds and rounds of antibiotics and finally been referred to an ENT... and as much as I hate seeing him have to have tubes, I'm kinda hoping this will really help him, not just with the ear infections but his speech too... He had a well-check today and his speech was a big topic in addition to his ears, but she really thinks it's because he has so much fluids back there that he hears things muffled and why he doesn't pronounce very well... Has that happened to anyone's kids too... I guess the other reason I worry is because I lost hearing when I had tubes as a kid and I don't want that either... Not to mention I had to have them twice because my first ones fell out, sigh...
 
My daughter used to have about 5-6 ear infections a year, and get strep about 1-2 times/year. This went on will she was 7-8years old. I took her to an ENT who thought taking out her tonsils would help. And THAT did it. We had her tonsils removed two years ago (I think).... and she hasn't had an ear infection since. I was amazed.
 
Carter had tons of ear infections and finally got tubes at 2-1/2. He didn't speak at all besides mama. Our family doc was convinced it was because of fluid in his ears and the infections, but his speech therapist thought he was autistic. He got tubes and within a few months he had quite the vocabulary and no more infections. So, it was a wonderful blessing for him.

We went back and forth about getting tubes for one of our boys, he had quite a few ear infections and after the first appt with the ENT, we took a wait and see approach because he was right on the cusp of his ears maturing to the point where he shouldn't need them (and because I was getting ready to have major surgery). We ended up back at the ENT about 6-8 months later and ended up with tubes and he hasn't had an ear infection since. Of course, the ear that was always so easy to get infected lost the tube within the first few weeks of surgery, but I am just thankful that he hasn't any more ear infections. Our ENT also removed his adenoids at the same time.
 
Oh... thank you, this is exactly what I need to hear... The ENT we've been referred to is pretty conservative in going the tube route, but she thinks that he'll go for it because of his speech... He's not really delayed in the fact that he talks a lot, we just can't understand him and I'm really hoping this will help him hear what words are supposed to sound like :wub
 
I hope you're able to get some help for him!

We talked about it once with my daughter because she was getting lots of ear infections, but we tried allergy meds first and they seemed to help her.
 
My 5 yo nephew has had several sets of tubes, adenoids and now tonsils removed. Even with vigilantly going to the ENT and dealing with it, he has some level of hearing loss per the last ENT visit. I would definitely go and get the tubes. My other niece had the same issues. But now she has no speech issues other than talking loud. lol.

Oh, we were posting at the same time so I missed this... he's 3 1/2 years old.... and that's what happened to me when I had tubes... I went back for my follow up and had lost one, so they went back in there and put bigger ones in... incedently, I still have my holes in my ear drum but am terrified of having a skin graft done... so I still have to wear ear plugs when I swim LOL

thanks... yeah, I had some hearing loss from the tubes, so I expect he'll probably have a little too, but I would love to be able to understand him... and I'm used to loud LOL
 
My daughter was having hearing issues due to numerous ear infections. (She's 21 mind you, so this was YEARS ago). The tonsils/adenoids being removed fixed her issues, no more ear infections.

I know Krista said her daughter also had strep in addition to the ear infections... did yours have other things going on besides just the ear infections?
 
madelyn had tubes for the first time before she was 1. we went round and round with ear infections and allergic reactions to antibiotics and when it started to affect her sleeping and the fact that she was sick every other week, we decided tubes were the best route.


we had to get everything taken out eventually. her adenoids came out about 8 mo after the tubes, then her tonsils came out 3 mo after the adenoids. she's like a different kid since the surgeries.

DD had tons of ear infections as a young kid. She was also sick all the time. Never able to get rid of colds. they'd last over a month at a time. we got her tonsils and adenoids taken out due to the colds. Best decision ever! As I was reading this thread I realized that is the exact time when her ear infections stopped as well.
