So after a REALLLLLY long break, i've decided to try to remember how to sew. I learned in, um, maybe 6th grade, and I sewed for a few years. Then I stopped... got to busy, whatever.

Now I totally have this itch to start sewing again... well I've had it for several months, but I'm finally unable to ignore it. Only problem is, I picked up a basic book on sewing with some easy little projects in it, and I feel like I'm reading another language. I'm kinda thinking it will be best for me to just try and learn from my mistakes.

Anyway, just thought I'd see if anyone else around here has the sewing bug. And maybe some pointers? Or some vocab explanations... like what on earth is basting? I thought that was for turkeys? :giggle

i totally have the sewing bug right now! i just made a quick and easy tote a couple days ago! and i have jamma bottoms on my to do list this week!

i would start with small and of course easy projects...pillow case maybe? tote bags are fun too- like the one i made is a reusable grocery bag type! It was a free pattern from Burda Style called The Charlie Bag. (you can see it on my bloggie!)

Basting is basically doing a quick large stitch to secure your project before really sewing it...like in quilting....works better than just pinning in many instances...im usually too lazy to do it though-haha!

Val that bag is adorable!
I checked out the Berda Style website. Will be going back through that when I have some free browsing time.

lol...I read your post Rebecca and immediately thought of Val. I totally wish I could sew. I was given a sewing machine last year and I can't figure out how to even get the thread right. I laugh at trying to think I can sew in a straight line. But oh how I would love to learn...I really would!

I love to sew - most of the time I only sew for specific projects (Halloween costumes, Christmas stockings, curtains) and don't really do much FUN sewing - I really need to do it more!!

Does sewing on Cub badges count? Or patching kness on the boys' jeans? (endlessly patching the knees...)

My sewing machine is in a serious need for a checkup and overhaul. Dh gave it to me for our 6 month annivesary (at my request), so that makes it *cough* *cough* 21 *cough* years old. But I've heard that Husqvarna machines should last a lifetime.

Learning to sew is actually on my must-do list for 2011. It's pretty much the only crafty thing that I don't know how to do. I am really interested in learning. I had a traumatic (long story!) sewing machine experience in Middle School that has kept me from trying it. I'm going to do it though...I am!

I use to sew alot...but its been a long time since I sewed. Maybe 4 or 5 years ago was the last time...sewed DH name on his work clothes. I guess I should start on it again :)....I want to start quilting :)

Val, going to go check out your blog :)

I used to sew a lot too...but really haven't done much in the last 8 years or so. I even bought a serger about 15 years ago...and I'm thinking I'm going to list it on Craigs List. If you sew a lot...it's so wonderful to have.

I used to make a lot of my own clothes, I made my brothers some western style shirts many moons ago that they never wanted to wear (I worked SO hard on them too), my own bathing suit, blankets, pillow cases, fun holiday items for the house...

no more though. I just don't have the time or the desire. :(

I am by no means an experienced sewer but i seem to be able to follow a pattern and sew in a fairly straight line lol. That was a far cry from a few years agao when i couldn't sew straight to save myself. I haven't ventured into sewing my own clothes (although that is on my list of things to do) but i am currently making my costume for my 3th birthday party and have made a bag. My next little project is cushion covers....

I actually just sewed something for the first time today. I made a few pillow covers for my living room. I would love to learn more about sewing...

I just started my sewing adventure :). I've almost finished a dress for one of my girls ... it's meant to be for the eldest but we'll see, at least I have a handy back up plan.

I've got a friend who's a dab hand with the sewing machine, she came round and spent yesterday going through it the process from the beginning. Took us most of the day (while the four children we have between us completely trashed my house :duh) but I learnt so much going through it with someone knowledgeable.

I definitely wouldn't have leapt in with something so complex on my own! The armholes and little sleeves were so fiddly. I need to put on the last panel today then I'll upload a pic to share :)

I´m actually thinking about getting a sewing machine - I would love to get productive and creative this way, but I´m not sure if I will be able to do it, lol. I failed miserable when we learned kinda of this stuff in school, lol.
